The Mandelson affair leaves civil service in grave peril Whitehall needs reform but Starmer’s careless attitude to its independence plays into the hands of potential wreckers

Not to absolve Keir Starmer, but I think this is another example of Long Johnson. The sacking of civil servants for political reasons started then, & broke a consensus, which makes it much more tempting now. As DF says, paves the way for Reform to finish the job.

Oh this is such dreadful news. Please pass on my condolences to his family and friends. He really had such a positive impact on everyone he interacted with, he was so generous with his knowledge and expertise, even though I did not know him in person.

The simple test for me is: is this intended to be read and then for the reader to return to the text? In which case it should be a footnote, not an endnote.

Sir James Anderson celebrating after taking James Sales’ wicket

Sir James Anderson has now dismissed James and David Sales in his career. Any other examples of one bowler dismissing both father and son in first class cricket?
Despite the grim score he’s been a pleasure to watch today.

I am reminded this week of the critical role legal academics can play, for good or for ill, in legal issues big or small.

I'll be honest. I wasn't sure whether SB could carry off a court-based thriller, but I genuinely ate this book up. Loved it.

With a few former PMs offering their advice to Starmer in recent weeks which past occupants of No10 (plus a few others) do people think it's worth Government listening to?
Major & Brown are the only two where the public are more likely to say they're worth listening to than not

It is good that Research England excluded open access for books from the 2029 REF, but the transition to longform open access publishing is suffering from gridlock. We have a new report out today arguing we need a national strategy before the next REF

Not just the missing algorithmic promotion but a human inhibition about engaging - even with just a Like - which at least tells people you are still there and interested. I Like less than I used to, without understanding why.

Hi…

That, but also the timeline churn is less meaning less may be seen - e.g. on looking at your and @seanjones.org profiles just now I have seen a number of posts I hadn’t spotted before (the different effect of like-ing may be a key driver there)

Today is special. It's the day when the new King's Counsel are appointed. Their day is a whirl of flummery and congratulation. Their family spills, giggling, into court to hear judges praise them for the work they have done, the people they've helped and the principles they've established /2
