Not to absolve Keir Starmer, but I think this is another example of Long Johnson. The sacking of civil servants for political reasons started then, & broke a consensus, which makes it much more tempting now. As DF says, paves the way for Reform to finish the job.

Oh this is such dreadful news. Please pass on my condolences to his family and friends. He really had such a positive impact on everyone he interacted with, he was so generous with his knowledge and expertise, even though I did not know him in person.

The Association of Law Teachers conference is underway!
Our first keynote speaker is Kirsty Brimelow KC, Chair of the Bar Council of England and Wales. “Whose Freedom? Law, Power, and Social Justice”.
More to come as we explore Reimagining Legal Education for the Future of Law. #ALT2026
There is a new Clerk of the Parliaments - and the first time, it is a woman!
The simple test for me is: is this intended to be read and then for the reader to return to the text? In which case it should be a footnote, not an endnote.
Scientists have been working very hard and have finally achieved what many thought impossible: a Mail Online comments section defending a Labour MP.
She's up for an Olivier tonight for Inter Alia, but what is S Miller working on next? “I’m looking at what jurors bring into the jury room ...a slice of 12 different lives... how they come together ... different kinds of intellectual capacity, political leanings, race, gender” tinyurl.com/5akbynht
I knew it was bad but really didn’t appreciate it was quite this bad

Sir James Anderson celebrating after taking James Sales’ wicket
Sir James Anderson has now dismissed James and David Sales in his career. Any other examples of one bowler dismissing both father and son in first class cricket?
Despite the grim score he’s been a pleasure to watch today.
I am reminded this week of the critical role legal academics can play, for good or for ill, in legal issues big or small.
Being a department head takes both emotional and cognitive energy to juggle people, programmes, contracts and institutional demands. But digging into skills such as trust-building and communication will bear fruit, writes Ben K. Daniel: https://ow.ly/Sr3550YCpvL #AcademicChatter #Academia #HigherEd
Academics and universities are still wrong about social media. My co-author @bogers.bsky.social and I argue in University World News @uniworldnews.bsky.social
that most of the dominant negative social media narrative in academia is wrong! / THREAD

I'll be honest. I wasn't sure whether SB could carry off a court-based thriller, but I genuinely ate this book up. Loved it.
I don’t know who to credit this with, but it’s perfect for those of us drafting into uncertainty.
It will now be at least 24 years between Italy getting to the 2006 world cup final and them playing another knockout game in the tournament.
With a few former PMs offering their advice to Starmer in recent weeks which past occupants of No10 (plus a few others) do people think it's worth Government listening to?
Major & Brown are the only two where the public are more likely to say they're worth listening to than not
It is good that Research England excluded open access for books from the 2029 REF, but the transition to longform open access publishing is suffering from gridlock. We have a new report out today arguing we need a national strategy before the next REF

Not just the missing algorithmic promotion but a human inhibition about engaging - even with just a Like - which at least tells people you are still there and interested. I Like less than I used to, without understanding why.
Dyslexia affects 10% of the UK population, but in law, it is still widely misunderstood. This week in The Journal, Joe Royster makes the case for what dyslexic lawyers genuinely bring to the profession.

Hi…
That, but also the timeline churn is less meaning less may be seen - e.g. on looking at your and @seanjones.org profiles just now I have seen a number of posts I hadn’t spotted before (the different effect of like-ing may be a key driver there)
It's silks day! Huge congratulations to all the barristers and clerks celebrating today.
Chair of the Bar Kirsty Brimelow KC attended the ceremony at Westminster Hall to celebrate with all those being sworn in as King's Counsel by the Lord Chancellor.
@kirstybrimelow.bsky.social
Today is special. It's the day when the new King's Counsel are appointed. Their day is a whirl of flummery and congratulation. Their family spills, giggling, into court to hear judges praise them for the work they have done, the people they've helped and the principles they've established /2
