I've just looked it up (bc I was sure I was right), and learned that I was wrong! Not only is the equinox made up, the full moon date is as well.
What a mess.

It removes one variable, so it's simpler to calculate. Less chance of causing an argument on the rare occasions when the equinox and full moon are both around midnight on a Sunday!

Idly wondering how often those two are not the same...
