I kind of wish politicians had pushed two factor authentication like that. Maybe electrification? Edison did electrocute an elephant to try and win an argument about AC or DC power. Otherwise, this feels like a scam being pulled on all of us.

I get the same sort of feel from this Techdirt article. Companies want to hold all the profit and externalize all costs. That can't be how this continues to work, right? www.techdirt.com/2026/04/16/t...
The puzzle I get from all of this is: trucks do the most damage to our roads. But any way we seem to try to make the heaviest road users pay gets dumped on individual taxpayers. Am I wrong in thinking that the "cost of business" wasn't passed on at some point?
Good. About time someone stuck it to Ticketmaster. Thanks @peterneronha.bsky.social arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...
I use that one. It seems like a take on spelunking which is kind of what their tools do.
It absolutely should.
Feels like there was a missed opportunity to have Bacon storm a supermarket and press gang the stockperson to fix his cannonballs. 😊
Being purely instructive wasn't really the point, but it would have been nice to have a visual depiction of the inefficient pyramid with the hexagonal depiction to make it easier to compare and see why Kepler was right.
I was a little puzzled because the pyramid of cannonballs looked pretty close to the depictions of the orange stacks but the hexagonal packing in 2d looked different.
I enjoyed the long form very much. I particularly enjoyed the discussion on bandwidth usage and error correction as packing problems. I liked the diagram showing Kepler's solution. All very interesting.
I also would love to be off natural gas entirely but not quite there.
I'm definitely on board. I'm just anticipating a lot of FUD when folks don't see a larger impact. We need really good messaging on this. I'll take $3 a month and look forward to getting where Europe is someday.
I was interested to read about efforts to install induction stoves in public housing in NYC. Worked around aging gas pipes, improved air quality, and lowered bills. The people interviewed were really happy to be able to do things like cook Thanksgiving for their families and give up their hot plates
I think a part of the discussion is also the amount of available time (and facilities) that people have to cook from scratch. It's hard for many people to fit that into their day so they reach for less healthy ready-made options. I suspect that gets worse for poor people.
We need more aggressive plans to deploy renewable energy and have a greater absolute impact on folks' utility bills.
Getting solar panels and a battery did more for our bill. I'm not sure when the payback will be, but our bill is effectively zero with the battery payment every year. That covers most of our heat now with the new hybrid heat pump/gas furnace and my commute with my EV.
I'm glad we are doing more with renewable energy for a lot of reasons, but most people are going to look at that and think it wasn't worth it.
This is interesting work. I have to admit, I was hoping the impact on lowering bills would be greater. Telling folks that we did all this to save $3 a month on a $200 electric bill doesn't feel great.
Just take the capsule to the help desk for support and then get back to your trip. 😉
What a crummy slate of candidates. Is there anyone worth voting for in the RI governor's race?
But it's early yet, so I could be persuaded.
I have an initial strong reaction against anyone endorsed by the feckless Democratic leadership. I'm inclined to support whoever Neronha endorsed since I think he's done more than national leadership has done. I'm a little disappointed he's not in the governor's race.
He needs to then die immediately. Otherwise, no notes. Perfection.
