I don't care that Ravenclaw changed back to the original eagle mascot. I wouldn't care if you told me Hagrid has gay sex with Vernon in the first ten minutes. Let it die in obscurity.

I do not believe there is any way to financially support HP without contributing directly to anti-trans legislation and hatred. That includes going to theme parks, buying the new adaptations or video games, or watching the show. I also don’t believe fandom has nearly as much influence on HP’s continued popularity as we would like to believe. It’s a massive franchise that isn’t going anywhere because most people who care about it and are paying into it aren’t here online with us. It’s the plastic straw in the ocean vs the entire fishing industry, and after thinking about it for literally years, I refuse to condemn other queer ppl for finding a safe space in community, even one that has been tarnished.

However, what gives me pause when interacting with anyone online re: fan works there is not being able to tell for sure if they are a true ally, and I have never wanted to be mistaken for anything but one. I haven’t found a good solution to that, which is a part of why I haven’t touched my unfinished HP works in years. I could elaborate further if ppl were interested, but it all boils down to the same thing. Fuck JKR, and especially fuck her for trying to control not only the legal, financial, and health sides of trans people’s lives, but also for digging her fingers into the marrow of fandom—a community which has always been pervasively queer and subversive by its very nature. Fuck her, fuck that, and fuck that fucking show.

I wrote out something long and complicated about HP and the cursed tv show and then didn’t post it but in case anyone doesn’t know where I stand by now, the thesis is basically this:
