In discussions of DC statehood, I always see (non Puerto Ricans) bring up "PR should get statehood, too." My sense was that most Puerto Ricans would prefer independence over statehood. Is that right? Watching Ricky Martin sing Bad Bunny's lyrics about Hawaii drove that home.

ICE WATCH 101: DC BYSTANDER GUIDE 1. VERIFY THAT IT IS ICE • It is important that you try & verify that it's ICE. DC is uniquely overpoliced - apart from MPD, we have 30+ federal law enforcement agencies in the District. It can be difficult to tell them apart. • Look at their badges, arm patches, vests/ jackets, and cars. ICE vehicles can be marked as ICE or DHS. 2. DOCUMENT BUT DO NOT ENGAGE • Record the date, time, and location of the incident. Be as specitic as possible! • Take pictures and video. Try to capture pictures of the officers and their vehicles. Do NOT post the photos or video on social media. • Other relevant info to document: How many agents are there? What are they doing? • Do NOT engage. Trump recently signed an executive memo targeting ActBlue, the fundraising platform used by much of the progressive ecosystem (including us) and the entire Democratic Party. This is straight out of the authoritarian playbook. Trump wants to crush the resistance to his autocratic agenda.

But I have a feeling everyone typing out these comments is just waiting for someone else to take the lead and tell them what to do. And not listening or seeking the voices that are already doing that.
Now for those doing the work and wondering where more of their community is and why it's not standing behind them, that's a different story.
Join them. Or figure out how you can support those who are or make a difference in the way that makes best sense for you. But don't sit around complaining and waiting for someone else to save your country for you.
Amidst all the news, I keep reading comments sections that say "Why aren't people in the streets, shutting this down?" Those who type that, are you in the streets? Why not? Many people are not in the streets for those same reasons. Many people ARE in the streets.
