Mike Gallagher: Design is politics Weeknote, w/c 19 January 2026

an attempt to articulate something hopeful in the face of a never-ending stream of horror. it felt like good time to reflect on design as politics, as someone who was born in the US and now works for the NHS.

what you’re describing about local variation is absolutely possible – we already do it for “online consultation” tools. it kind of works but also introduces a fair amount of complication when stuff overlaps or when people have access to services from multiple jurisdictions.

the paucity of possible emoji reactions is really winding me up. the heart is for the compliment, not your story, which unfortunately is all too common and not a thing i like!

but also: imho we should have a workforce of ≈500 people doing this work with frontline staff. i have never been to a care setting and not met frustrated practice/hospital staff. ever. they need more help.

Mike Gallagher: Patient safety is user-centred design is patient safety On the mirroring of two disciplines

i work with a bunch of clinicians. they're doctors and nurses and pharmacists. i am pretty well convinced that, even though we have different job titles, we do the same thing. i am convinced we all do user-centred design.

Mike Gallagher: Design principles for teams working in healthcare An attempt to define what we mean when we say a “good user experience” in the context of the NHS

we've been working on a set of design principles for our teams. they aren't anything radical, they are just tailored for our space, with clinical safety concepts baked in. hopefully they are useful to other people.
