Looking at the names of geographic features of the Moon is a time travel lesson itself - you can tell *when* things were named very often by *what* they were named.

Glitched text reading MAMA'S SLEEPING ANGELS sits surrounded by purple lights. Beneath which a blood-haired girl kisses the cheek of a green-haired decapitated girl's head (Y2K art style)

There's a great section in this by @philippawarr.bsky.social about how easily the personality of the text is lost if you aren't approaching its localisation in a flexible and human way.
(Also many more good sections by many more good people - it's a good book)

I keep seeing posts going "when ICE comes to MY city, we'll be out in the streets even harder" and man, I get that sentiment but I need everyone to understand that the work in Minneapolis is partly confrontational but MORE IMPORTANTLY aaallll the stuff organized in the background to help neighbors
It's not just "stand up to ICE when you see them," it's building many vast networks of support and trust to
- create safe spaces
- protect schools
- get kids TO school
- check on neighbors
- deliver groceries
- help pay the rent
- let people know of danger
- feed the helpers, too!
- and on and on
watched a yt video essay about the objectification of women in modern media and biopics and they used the term "torture corn" instead of torture porn and i think for the sake of what you are talking about you should take the demonetization to use the appropriate language. words mean things.
first ex. reflects a semi-common loc shift, from "reducing someone to group/categorical identity" to "harping on the implied personal attribute" (immaturity)

"sasuga, for a baseball club member"
(what is the unspoken nuance of "baseball club member"?
-> "what a total jock/meathead")
AI dubs aren't just an attempt to replace voice actors. Engineering, mixing, writing, directing, and QC are also cut, narrowed down to a single prompter.
When I write dub scripts, it is an exercise in musicality, translation, and personal life experience. A prompter understands none of that.
Also include audio description in this. I queued up The Man Who Invented Christmas last year, interested to hear how they approached the AD, and while the description writing was fine, the voice was AI and felt spooky. That's taking a job from a voice actor and insulting the blind audience.
FREELANCER TIP: THE 25% RULE!
The MOMENT payment hits your bank account, calculate 25% of the value of the invoice and then transfer that amount immediately to a savings account and DO NOT TOUCH IT. THAT'S FOR TAXES. Then pay yourself the remaining 75%. Account for this when determining rates!!!

Asking folks to look out for Alaska Natives this holiday who are still dealing with the devastation of miles & miles of their homes, villages, traditions, foods, & ways of life & their displacement & instability continues.
the air is still trying to kill you btw. levels of covid in the general population are comparable to 2020 if not at times higher. please consider wearing a mask so the air doesnt kill you (vaccines are fantastic but you can still get it + suffer long term effects even if youre vaxxed)
Bluesky has finally, quietly posted a position for a one-year remote contract Policy Lead, Trust & Safety position.
Trans people who qualify, apply here: jobs.gem.com/bluesky/am9i...
We need someone competent in this role if this place is going to survive.
On this Trans Day of Remembrance, I would have you remember that there are trans people alive who need your action now, not your reflective words later.
Remembering us is not enough.
Quotation marks in particular are quite just for emphasis in Japanese. When I see, for instance, a popup in English with a proper noun in quotes, what I see is a failure to consider writing conventions in both languages. I promise even the literalists won't tar and feather you for dropping them.
Just because Japanese has analogous punctuation marks to English doesn't mean they're exclusively used in like-for-like ways all the time. Part of good translation is interrogating how even punctuation is used on a case by case basis and translating based on functionality, not physical resemblance.
in the early 2000s Rebecca took the time to chat over IRC with a teenaged and gender-confused Me on the practicalities of transition - in a time where being out as trans online was something that could get you socially ostracized. I owe her a lot for that and only hope I can pay it forward.
"You have such restrictions on how you can do it, and if you want to express everything, you have to be really creative on how you do it,” said Paquet.
A blurb from an article from awhile back about subtitle translation! A great read:

I wrote more words about how it feels to be a translator watching the games press report on AI and labor, coming from a field that's fought these battles for decades. It may look like I'm beating up on one outlet, but it's not about them; I've been trying to write this for me and my peers all year.
Not me reading that headline with my eyes glazed over. 😵💫 Lot of in-house loc jobs where you're lucky to break $50k, even at world famous pubs with top talent, all in a rental market where that ain't nearly enough.
Of course it's $150k if you're GDC and surveying people in your own ecosystem lol
