We’re trying to improve support for people with acquired brain injury (ABI) experiencing suicidality or self-harm.

If you’re an adult with ABI who has faced mental health challenges, or a clinician/researcher, please consider completing our survey:

🚨Check out our new paper led by @jaicarmichael.bsky.social

We argue that @hitop-system.bsky.social has significant potential in clinical practice but to facilitate wider translation it must be presented as standing on its own two feet.

We're still inviting people with ABI, close others (Australia), clinicians, & researchers (worldwide) to share their experiences & needs around suicidality and self-harm after ABI.
Conversations so far have been incredibly valuable and deeply appreciated.

psychology research to practice could improve mental health care but it is challenging. Researchers often frame the problem in terms of uptake failure by clinicians. But are they doing clinically useful research? In press, American psychologist

I had the privilege of speaking with 20 people with ABI about their experiences of psychological treatment for sleep & fatigue. Their accounts help us understand how psychology can help & what to consider going forward.

Pleased to share this prepublication Viewpoint w/ @drdarrenhaywood.bsky.social, accepted in JoPaCS.

We argue that HiTOP's marketing to clinicians can be improved by focusing on its intrinsic strengths, rather than framing it as a corrective to the DSM/ICD.

🚨 New preprint! 🚨

We explored suicidal ideation after moderate-severe traumatic brain injury. Findings suggest emotional dysregulation, coping style, resilience, & cognitive difficulties are linked to suicidality through symptoms of depression & anxiety.

Interesting new review explores how metabolic dysfunction may contribute to mood and anxiety disorders post-TBI, but concludes further research is needed. Biological contributors remain poorly understood—despite the intrinsic biological nature of TBI.

Challenging behaviour, activity, and participation following acquired brain injury: a scoping review of interventions delivered by allied health professionals Background This scoping review aimed to identify literature describing allied health interventions used to address challenging behaviour for adults with an acquired brain injury (ABI) living in commun...

New systematic review finds allied health interventions have the potential to reduce challenging behaviour in people with ABI. Most interventions use an individualised, positive behaviour support framework to modify the environment and increase self-regulation skills.

Flyer titled 'Understanding and addressing suicidality & self-harm after acquired brain injury.' It invites participants to take part in a one-on-one interview to share their needs in supporting people with ABI with experience of suicidality or self-harm.

The flyer lists three groups sought for interviews:

People with ABI: With experience of suicidal thoughts/behaviours or self-harm, aged 18+, living in Australia.
Close others (e.g., family, friends): Supporting someone with ABI who has experience of suicidal thoughts/behaviors or self-harm, aged 18+, living in Australia.
Clinicians & Researchers: Working with people with ABI, worldwide, no prior experience with self-harm/suicide necessary.
It includes a link and QR code to a short expression of interest survey (https://redcap.link/x2n3c8wr) and contact details for Jill.Hwang@monash.edu and Jao.Carminati@monash.edu. The flyer features logos for Monash Epworth Rehabilitation Research Centre and Monash University. Ethics approval: MUHREC #42790.

We’ve received funding to develop resources addressing suicidality & self-harm after ABI.

🔎 Stage 1 involves scoping interviews with:
- ABI survivors & close others (Australia only, for now)
- Clinicians/researchers (esp. keen to hear from those less experienced).

Please share with your networks!

These data are super consistent with a theory we published recently arguing that the ventral pathway may be best described as a basis set of local visual features (like DNNs), and may not compute global object properties like shape.
