Heading to Zürich tomorrow to give presentations at UZH and ETH. I'll be around for 9 days, so if you happen to be close to Zürich and want to meet, let me know! I'll be happy to talk about data privacy, synthetic data, missing data and statistics/machine learning in general!

Hitler's NSDAP never gained the support of more than one-third of voters in free and fair elections!

Just like far-right leaders today, Hitler came to power because of the collaboration of right-wing elites, who either wanted to "fight off the left" or thought they could play the far right.

What’s this thing that people pretend to be married to academia after getting enrolled in a PhD programme? Like, you can change professions halfway in your PhD, and 10+ years after finishing it. It’s just a job man

ok hive mind, give me holiday inspiration: I'm heading to England in November for a friend's wedding, seems ridiculous to fly all that way just for a couple of days, so where else is good to visit that time of year? I figure it'll be cold... ("meet your bsky mutuals irl" suggestions also considered)

OP: “hey, any suggestions for going to England?”

All answers: “yeah don’t go to england”

Anyway, I only visited Newcastle and Manchester to watch football, both were fun and had some nice museums.

They're going to write books about all the big brain moves of this gang of imbeciles and among them will be "Spending a year trying to kill renewable energy and then launching a war that sends oil prices soaring"

Hey #rstats & #econsky:
fixest v0.14.0 is out!

In particular, it fixes a very annoying, false positive, warning message regarding the positive definiteness of the VCOV (when clustered).

Please update!

I’m convinced some professors do get paid per article. Why on earth would you otherwise crank out 200 papers per year?

Inside the Department of War are two wolves:

"We've shut down the Colleges of War because book learnings are woke, gay, and irrelevant to war fighting."

"How come no one told us the Strait is important, there are different kinds of Kurds, Iran is big, and air power historically doesn't win wars?"

I don't think the variable types matter so much, but rather the relationships between predictors and outcomes. If these happen to be step functions, CART will probably be fine. But if the functions are smoother, CART likely needs many splits (and thus many parameters) to approximate reasonably.

"I got my PhD by writing prompts instead of doing research, I'm winning"

got some bad news, there still no jobs and now you also know nothing

To be fair, I don’t engage with anything there, except for an occasional message by someone I know personally. But now I’m thinking about it, I once reacted to a stupid take on imputation as data fabrication, so perhaps that’s why I get all this nonsense in my feed 😂

Thanks! And yes, I agree. We have many people spending a ton of attention on making estimators a wee bit more efficient, and then in practice, people are like "just do mean imputation how bad can it be"
