Well have you considered that the media may have just started covering it? I grew up in a Catholic neighborhood, Irish, Italian, German. Everyone wore their crosses on Ash Wednesday, but being publicly Catholic has always been an issue for this country's WASP nativists.

Yes, they did. I grew up Catholic, we ALL did. You were supposed to keep it on all day. It's a sign of repentance, not of divine favor, it's the fault of our vapid culture that people don't get that now. But Americans have always been suspicious of Catholics, nothing new.
