8/9 For socialists, our "people orientation" means fighting for emancipation from the fetters of capitalism that chain our spirit and potential to greed and violence.
Workers deserve more.
We deserve the whole world.
7/9 Artemis II reminds us that people are creative, curious, empathetic, and intelligent — and that the planet and its people are worth defending. Fiercely.
That is “a people orientation.”
6/9 ”You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch.’”
Well said, Edgar.
5/9 Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell said this about his mission: “You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. …
4/9 Meanwhile, Trump feeds the war machine by axing crucial welfare programs and popular agencies like the Forest Service, and makes plans to auto-enroll men into the draft — a dark step toward forced military service.
So: what is it all for?
3/9 But as they soared above us, down below the US and Israel unleashed a racist, greed-driven war on Iran and Lebanon. Costs skyrocket for the working class. Cuba remains under siege. And ICE’s war at home continues apace.
2/9 Just like everyone else, we’ve been touched by the great wonder of the cosmos and the love and solidarity the NASA astronauts showed for each other and the people of Earth.

As Artemis II splashes down today and Earth welcomes the crew home, our shared “moon joy” of the last ten days might be mixed with a bit of sad irony.
