relatedly, while looking up the title of the book to make sure I'd remembered the author's name correctly, I had the joy of discovering that there's a new revised edition out that includes "contemporary writing in several of California's Native languages"

My professional life has taken me in a very different direction (I'm a computational linguist by training), but in another lifetime where I actually pursued that PhD I was thinking about, that's where I might have wound up.

At some point I got my hands on a copy of Leanne Hinton's "Flutes of Fire", which is about California's indigenous languages, and while a lot of the technical details went over my head at the time it got me really fired up about endangered languages. It's a topic I'm still really passionate about!

My middle school Spanish teacher had a background in linguistics! I can no longer remember how or why this came up in the classroom, but her passion for languages played a huge role in my own decision to pursue linguistics as a career.

Anyway before I get back to work let me just vent a little bit of anxiety: there are people who will HATE this book and therefore ME and I just have to BRACE FOR IT

This is not just a book with no heroes (like THE SIEGE OF BURNING GRASS) but all villains. Some characters know it. Some don't.
