It’s been a real career highlight to act as one of the inaugural Vice Chairs of the @coarassessment.bsky.social Steering Board.
In this interview I enjoyed reflecting on my three year term on the Board. 👇🏻
Please don’t dilute my rant with your facts. 😉
Very selfless of you, Jon, thank you. 😉
European friends, I love you, but can you please stop adding chocolate to your muesli? Chocolate cereals are for children and muesli is for grown-ups. Thank you.
Highly recommend this piece from @lizziegadd.bsky.social and @bedforms.bsky.social on the new report on #GenerativeAI and #REF2029

"The challenge, now, is to ensure that its integration reflects sector values, not just technological possibility."
If we *really* believe that diverse research teams lead to better research, at what point do we reject research that has not adhered to those principles?
Currently at an absolute loss as to how Research England can demand equality impact assessments from the HEIs they fund through REF and then recruit an all-male team (3 senior and white) to investigate the use of AI in REF. chet.bristol.ac.uk/research/ref...
Ha! Thank you
Ha! Hope you’re doing well. Great news about your new appointment!
'Such reliance on rankings means that universities are shaped not by the needs of society or by innovations driven from inside the international higher-education community, but by unappointed third-party ranking agencies'

“The term “responsible” in research assessment cannot be co-opted and marketed, it must be earned—through transparency, context sensitivity, authentic engagement, mixed-methods evidence, & ongoing evaluation & reform."

To be fair, I do make the point that culture is our second biggest issue after finance. However, I think REF will always be a lever no matter the state of an institution’s finances simply *because* it’s linked to funding. And there is a lot of unpicked low hanging fruit in the culture space…
Thanks @scurry.bsky.social
Well said. Good to have informed comment on this vital issue, rather than the misdirection of someone from a murkily-funded lobby group (not a ‘think tank’).
“In the recent DSIT survey of the UK Research & Development workforce, only 52 per cent of higher education respondents said the culture of their organisation enabled them to perform their best work, compared to 85 per cent in the private sector.”
Adding my voice to the chorus battling to retain an increased focus on people, culture, and environment in the next REF... wonkhe.com/blogs/the-ba...
Where now for the Research Excellence Framework? Five different views are presented in @timeshighered.bsky.social, including from @catdavies.bsky.social @lizziegadd.bsky.social @uofgvc.bsky.social @ProfAThompson @milespadgett.bsky.social

"I think the advice I would offer is to remember that leadership is a service role. Your job as a leader is to support the people who work for you, to protect them, to listen to them, & prioritize them."

Yes I believe that’s what they’re looking at which I think is right. I still think there is a need for rewarding effort and ambition, however. I do hope that’s not off the cards in any new iteration.
According to the Shanghai Ranking we come in 22nd this year. Based on a limited set of criteria, rankings can never really measure the true value of an institution. Tell us what you value most.
Really hoping they will join at some point!!

The beauty of a menopausal brain is that you learn new things every day, many of which aren’t actually new. 😂
