🔸️ Among men, retirement reduces episodic memory for those with sustained lower-complexity full-time employment only.
🔸️ Among women, positive effects concentrate in higher-complexity, full-time careers.
🔸️ In the long term, retirement effects are predominantly negative across clusters.
Using data from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) and the Mutual Information System on Social Protection (MISSOC), I combine sequence analysis of employment trajectories between ages 15 and 50 with fixed-effects two-stage least squares.
Three findings stand out:
Does retirement improve or harm cognitive functioning? Causal studies have produced inconsistent answers.
