That calling led me to become a lawyer. I moved to the Tamar Valley, fought the pulp mill, stood up for endangered species, helped stop greyhound cruelty, and defended the rights of everyday Tasmanians—like the long-term resident I helped stay in his home at a caravan park.

When I was 10, I wrote a poem about a Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagle—despite never having set foot in Tasmania. Even then, I felt a deep connection to this place and a calling to protect it.
