"I first intersected with Madame Dolores upon the release of her first solo album Obliquity of the Ecliptic (2012). She had been making waves in art for lifetimes before then - the mystic, rugged "worldbeat" band Soma Mestizo she fronted drew a blueprint that few have been brave enough to follow. In fact, 20 years ago this month, Mestizo performed at an event called "Three Years Too Many: Pittsburgh Says No to War."
With clarity and the moxie to "make it happen," Madame Dolores now rewards the vigilant with a Navigating Earth Manual (NAEAMA) - interdisciplinary multimedia to be experienced, by and for every means."
"Unread #161. It turns out Swampwalk put out their first album Sweatin' Out the Small Stuff the same day I put out Peerless Suavity.
I first met and performed with An six months later, in April 2015. I think I even barged my way into performing "Keep Me With You" with them at that first show, purely grateful to be performing again and to have found their hope in music.
An is flat-out a classic songwriter, undisputedly - you can tell, because their songs come from elsewhere.
I once wrote an artist bio for Swampwalk. It included the lines: "A little sawdust from the treehouse."
"I became aware of Riften most recently, another joy from the rubicund trove of The Rose Bowl. Milliseconds into their first song I turned to Candrika saying that I needed to talk to that person about songwriting.
There was a lot of emotionally charged music from the early 2000s that just narrowly missed me (I was glued to Czech Wikipedia entries of 1970s also-rans). Riften excites me because their music makes it all makes sense. Throughlines are encouraging, and it's healthy when someone else reaches out and taps your to-do list."
The spring tour continues this Fri for Why is My Heart in My Throat?: Selected Lyrics of J. Trafford. Madame Dolores, Swampwalk, and Riften will join J. for a discussion about their artistic lives and lyrical methods. FREE event starting at 7pm at The Maple Leaf. BYOB.
