Like the article said, everyone is human and will make mistakes occasionally. it's best to just be honorable and admit when you messed up, and try not to jump to conclusions if it looks too good to be true. It's no fun saying you saw something you didn't actually see.

Especially today, I think people (including myself sometimes) put too much trust in merlin sound Id. Don't get me wrong it's pretty great, but also not 100% reliable. Especially if the bird is far away, or there is a lot of background noise.

The lighting was bad that day so I couldn't see it super clearly. But I saw it again the next day in much better lighting making the same chirping sound and it was pretty clearly a chipping sparrow. That made a lot more sense in my area.

Really interesting read. Normally I think I'm pretty good at being sure about what I see. There's been a few times I've been wrong, like with the vesper sparrow a few weeks ago. Merlin said it was a vesper sparrow, but my phone is full of dust. So the mic isn't great.
