So true. They are often the only people who really understand what's going on in your life and your head. Great advice.
Can't put a heart on that one.
Please share with your primary teacher friends.
As a Canadian child watching American tv, the School House Rock "Elbow Room" song about manifest destiny used to give me the chills. Nothing has changed, it seems.
Been working with teens excluded from school. All have #SEND (most commonly ASD/ADHD/DLD) but were either diagnosed too late or not even assessed until after they were excluded. It’s heartbreaking
‘81% of children with behavioural disorders have significant language difficulties’
Hmmm - considering that NZ women won the vote in 1893, I think not 🙄
If they're men who follow only women, I block. It might not be perfect but I'm never felt guilty for doing it.
The education select committee has an inquiry on 'Solving the SEND crisis.' The list of questions is long and the time is short (Jan 30th), but even a short response mentioning your concerns about #DevLangDis and #SLCN can make a difference. committees.parliament.uk/call-for-evi...
Reading is not just about having a love of books, nor just being able to accurately lift words off the page. It's a product of both.
The simple view of reading, by Gough & Tunmer (1986) is something all teachers should be aware of.

'Hard fun' is a superb design mantra. ❤️
I had a similar comment before a training. A woman said her colleague warned her it wasn't one of those 'training days where you do nothing' - a great compliment but how sad that schools are paying for 'do-nothing' CPD. Staff and students deserve better.
Can we please stretch this to including students on the very fringes of education, even the ones some teachers have written off? A youth worker/TRT tutor was asked if That Reading Thing is fun & she answered, 'No, (shocked silence), but it's so satisfying they come back for more.' Best review ever.
A dear friend wrote this - not just about parents but what we can all do before we are someone else's 'elderly person'. Includes both the practical and the emotional stuff. www.firstfooteforward.com/buy-now
That is completely possible! I'm now picturing Ted wandering around in Upper Canada (which hasn't existed since 1841).
Didn't even notice till you pointed it out. :-)
I wonder if the other D is difficulty moving - still on the St John Ambulance site re fractures - and assume Pain and Tenderness the same.
Well I think we've found the solution. Thank you so much.
Hooray! Finally. And what does PILSDUCT stand for?
Favourite mnemonic? Labelling of axes on graphs. Y’d awake, vertical. X’hausted, horizontal.
This mnemonic has stuck in my head since a first aid course in the 70s. Sadly I have no idea what it's supposed to help me remember. Anyone?

A whole English lesson in a meme. Poetry, homographs (UK & Canada), homonyms (USA, apparently), using context to check meaning, synonyms across dialects (sack, bag & refuse, garbage, rubbish, trash).
Fun and also why I frequently consult dictionaries. 😀
Officially a bilingual speller (cause @theguardian.com tells me so). How about you? www.theguardian.com/science/2024...
I've been banging that drum for over 20 years now. Some are better than others but they all progress too slowly for vast majority of students doing That Reading Thing. Teens have so much latent knowledge that needs to be unlocked.
No, I haven't. Where can I access that? I've met so many adults over the years who suffered terribly because they were dyslexic and it still happens today though in a more subtle, less physical way. thatreadingthing.com/inclusion-de...
I think the switch will be worth the hard work.
@ged10.bsky.social
Glad you made it!
And here I thought we were doing ok without drugs. 🤦🏻♀️
We've been missing a trick here at That Reading Thing.
