Huge props to Andrew Woolley for clocking the Norfolk source as copied by Purcell, with his telltale scribal quirks ✍️

I was honestly so shocked to find this fragment; so much of the time when items are listed as ‘songs’ it’s just text without notation, but not all the time, and that is why it is important to check!

‘Almost unheard of’: experts find more music by English composer Henry Purcell Printed score and keyboard manuscript by Purcell, who died in 1695, unearthed in Worcestershire and Norfolk

Belated announcement - it was a pleasure to have my discoveries in Worcestershire and Norfolk county archives of new Purcell sources covered by the Guardian! When I harp on at my colleagues about how they should make sure to comb archives, carefully this is why…

Putting ‘went to summer camp with Jeffrey Epstein’ on my CV

9 months ago 1 0 0 0

Sometimes I think about how I played viola at junior conservatoire at University of Michigan, & how they helped local state schools send kids to Interlochen every summer. Anyways the Umich head of strings got convicted for child sex trafficking & Jeffrey Epstein had a holiday home at Interlochen

Convent connections: the musical networks of English convents in France, the exiled Stuart court and the Couperin family Abstract. Exchanges between French and English musical cultures in early modern Paris have finally begun to receive more scrutiny over the past two decades

Third article in a year, smashed 💪 if you are interested in convents, English catholic history, French baroque music, and/or material for my forthcoming steamy HBO show in which Francois Couperin fights his friend for the love of his friend’s wife*, check it out ➡️ academic.oup.com/em/article/d...

Second in-person MedRen smashed 💪
Phenomenal work by @medren2025.bsky.social continuing an unusually anarchic conference tradition. This conference stands out among other musicology conferences for its unique combo of high levels of calibre, craic, and camp, and it was a delight to be a part of 🥰

In hindsight signing up to do two papers at @medren2025.bsky.social might have been overly ambitious

If anyone anywhere needs help navigating the system, or support in other ways, please reach out, either to me or whomever you need. @willtheanderson.bsky.social and I couldn’t shoulder this burden alone, and we are so grateful to our friends and family (chosen or otherwise).

It took nearly 11 years of the state trying to bankrupt us, wear us down, & destroy any sense that I belonged to a community or family. But they couldn’t, and now, the home office has conceded that I do in fact belong here: I have been granted Indefinite Leave to Remain. And I ain’t going nowhere.

This is genuinely one of the hardest things to square psychologically: the very real fear one feels at being an immigrant dealing with hostile environment while also feeling guilty knowing that it is much easier for you as a ‘good immigrant’ (white with cultural capital and/or liquidity)

Its so rare as academics to get a chance to collectively dig down into fundamental issues with how we do research and have good, intense, productive debates, let alone play a small role in shaping how Early Music Happens - privilege indeed! 😊
