The ‘Little Scorpion’ of the French Riviera

I bet Thomas Pynchon is furious that he didn’t come up with the name ‘Severin Wunderman’ before real life did.

Too Much With Us, Late and Soon A Reflective Winter Solstice

"We may not all conceive of whatever it is as ‘holy,’ but I think most of us are seeking something that is beautiful and marvellous to us in some singular, seemingly intangible way. Like a more just world, with less cruelty, less suffering...this is the kind of ‘holiness’ I seek."

Madagascar [Opus 104] How terrible to entertain a lunatic! / To keep his earnestness from coming close!

I love a good literary hoax, especially if it’s at the expense of Modernism. But these are my takeaways from ‘about this poem’: Witter Bynner was an asshole; the hostess a hero; I hope the waitress sued.

Friends I have a lot of shallots in need of thin slicing and I can’t find the finger guard for my mandoline but I’m going in anyway.

Screenshot of a tweet from Joyce Carol Oates posted on Sunday, November 9th that reads "so curious that such a wealthy man never posts anything that indicates that he enjoys or is even aware of what virtually everyone appreciates--scenes from nature, pet dog or cat, praise for a movie, music, a book (but doubt that he reads); pride in a friend's or relative's accomplishment; condolences for someone who has died; pleasure in sports, acclaim for a favorite team; references to history. in fact he seems totally uneducated, uncultured. the poorest persons on Twitter may have access to more beauty & meaning in life than the "most wealthy person in the world."

Found the tweet that Joyce Carol Oates bodied Elon Musk with and it's so beautiful in its eloquent, simple take down. So much so he's crashing out trying to prove he reads books now. Put this in the Louvre.

Can’t help it: it pleases me to think of Kim Davis as the gay divorcee.

IN FULL - the moving tribute to Dame Patricia Routledge delivered at her funeral Dame Patricia Routledge - the full text of the tribute given at her Funeral in Chichester Cathedral on 5 November 2025 by the Very Reverend Nicholas Frayling, former Dean of Chichester.

FROM THE ANNALS OF UNEXPECTED CELEBRITY OF WHICH I DO NOT FEEL WORTHY

It has come to my attention that I was quoted by the Very Reverend Nicholas Frayling at the funeral of the great Dame Patricia Routledge. I should just retire now.

I agree. My last few years in Brooklyn, it made me sad seeing kids only going to shops and restaurants in the neighbourhood, not ringing neighbours’ doorbells.

Canceling Jimmy Kimmel show is not about Charlie Kirk, just like going after universities was not about antisemitism and occupying DC was not about fighting crime.
