This is possibly my favourite talk I've given in the last couple of years. It's about how to apply the stuff you've learnt at a conference (or through research) and how to convince your bosses that you need time to play.

Thank you!
Thanks!
We completed the half marathon! And we beat our target time. And we didn't die (yet)! Please throw some appreciative pennies at the donate button if you haven't already
Today, @helenjoscott.com and I are running the #llhalf for @prostatecanceruk.bsky.social. If you want to donate a little to motivate us, that would be enormously helpful!

Next week, I'm giving one of my favourite talks (about Code Review) at an event in Seville. The talk is in English, the rest of the event is probably Spanglish on my part. Sign up here:

I LOVE Samurai Jack!
It felt like a good way to describe what I do π
I updated my personal site! I've been wanting to give it a "proper" design overhaul for years, but the time investment needed meant that I kept putting it off. Thanks to Claude, and to having a bit more "free" time right now, I finally did it! Take a look:

I'll take it π

@birgitta410.bsky.social wrote some initial thoughts about Harness Engineering last month. Since then she's been researching more and has now written a thoughtful mental model for understanding the topic.

Iβve posted it before, but it feels evergreen
The two hardest problems in Computer Science are
1. Human communication
2. Getting people in tech to believe that human communication is important
That's true too, but many of these orgs used code reviews before this because they thought humans were better at finding bugs than automated tests
Whatβs the one JetBrains feature you canβt live without?
(a) Smart Completion
(b) Refactoring
(c) Debugger
(d) 'Search Everywhere'

Yes. And. Realise that organisations have adopted this approach because they see you, the developer employee, as a untrusted, unsupported individual working in isolation, and treat you as such.
Pull Requests (PRs) solve one problem only: you have broken up the work into small chunks that are completed by untrusted (and often unknown) individuals working in isolation without support or help, who produce potentially destructive changes, β¦

Let's do some marketing!
You know what's awesome? Deleting unnecessary JavaScript from your web apps... and you know why it's unnecessary? Because you can do that with CSS now. Yeah, really.
(I'll even throw in some AI so you can tell your boss it's AI training.)

I finally lost my shit about so-called AIs, LLMs, enshittification & everything fucking evil that @officialgrammarly.bsky.social is doing. I'm fucking furious, and not just about what 1 company has done. An open letter to Grammarly & the rest of the LLM hype machine www.moryan.com/an-open-lett...
This was a really interesting read, and sparked some ideas in my brain about other places to use AI
