Great to see the innovative work from one of our projects partners @ifremer.bsky.social being featured on @euronews.com This showcases the remarkable progress being made to develop innovative fishing gears that reduce bycatch in European fisheries. To learn more check out the links below...
Still lots of work to be done globally to better understand, protect and support these species
Finally getting a chance to catch up on this, including contributions from my colleagues at the Marine Institute and the status of sharks and rays in Irish waters
Year One, Done!
We’re at the end of the 1st year of Marine Beacon and have published out 1st Newsletter. If you’re curious about what we’ve been up to, this is a great place to dive in.
Thanks to everyone who’s been part of this work. Excited to see what Year 2 brings!

I highlighted the need for support (finances, time, training, morale) to ensure individuals with less-established careers feel able to coordinate HEU projects. Many highly capable people may feel unable to take on these roles; barriers must be removed to unlock wider potential. #ECRs
Key pathways to impact include working with the right partners to ensure developments can be implemented in the real world. @marinebeacon.bsky.social partners incl technology companies, marine scientists, economists & fisheries experts all working with key stakeholders to ensure uptake of outputs
I had the opportunity to participate in a panel at Enterprise Ireland's Horizon Europe conference yesterday. It was great to hear about diverse projects, including green cities, electric vehicles and renewable energy, all with aims and objectives dedicated to driving sustainable change
#jobfairy Another job in our team, working on @bioprotectproject.bsky.social This role will develop/propose coherent #MPA networks in Irish waters robust to climate change. Lots of collaboration with local & national stakeholders is central to this role. www.marine.ie/site-area/wo...
#jobfairy Come work at Marine Institute in Galway & join the CIBBRiNA project. 4 year post-doc. The role will include developing a modelling framework to design monitoring programmes, estimating bycatch probability, bycatch rates, and total bycatch. Deadline 17th Dec www.marine.ie/site-area/wo...
Introducing Marine Beacon! I'm coordinating this exciting project, which has big ambitions to improve knowledge on the status of vulnerable species in our seas & develop the tools & technology to reduce bycatch. Check out our website & sign up to our newsletter to learn more.
Some really interesting looking books in this list that could be great future suggestions for #marsocsci #bookclub bsky.app/profile/ferr...
Thank you so much to whoever put this very comprehensive list of #science Bsky starter packs together. This is just amazing: docs.google.com/document/d/1...
So many new and exciting people to follow in this space...but hard not to get sucked in for hours, especially after I've been working hard to reduce my screen time. My contributions may be limited as I find #balance while still enjoying #newshinythings
#WorldFisheriesDay: A good moment for me as a new-bee to #Bluesky to introduce some of the work I'm doing on knowledge co-creation with the #fishing industry and why it matters for marine #science. Let's start with some myth busting. 🔽 (w @julia-cal.bsky.social)

Introduce yourself with your worst feedback from school;
At a parents teacher meeting a teacher pretty much said 'well it's clear you aren't carrying this on to A-level so we don't need to worry about it too much'!
Picture taken from inside a train carriage, looking out of windows on the opposite side of the carriage to see a peach and purple sky and dark silhouettes of trees in the foreground.
And the silver lining to jumping on a painfully early train is watching the sky glow with a most beautiful sun rise over the frosty Midlands of Ireland. #traintravel #sunrise #viewfromawindow #worktravel

An early start to head up to Dublin for the Ocean Knowledge conference and a few days hearing all about Ireland's Ocean Future and key knowledge, research and innovation actions to address ocean sustainability and blue economy challenges. Find out more oceanknowledge2030.marine.ie/event/136269...
