Jane Eyre is a book, Death in the Afternoon is a cocktail. Chief of Staff is ”someone in charge of staff” I can’t replace the phrase with one word. But if it was a drink named that way then I’ll take two Chief of States please xD

What eventually made sense to me is the fact that if the whole phrase can be replaced by one noun (that happens to be named by a fucking long phrase) then I pluralize it as one word. If I can’t then I have to find the main noun in the phrase

I'm in no way an expert on grammar, just an ESL writer who went down this rabbit hole before! You're absolutely right on pluralizing compound nouns like mothers-in-law or attorneys general..... but the trick is..... cocktail names are proper nouns. Like book titles or shop names.
