The first sketch- aim here is to create a plan of how the final painting should look not just in terms of drawing but value as well!
Initial color block- in. Despite being digital, I treated this painting like I would a physical one, and worked back to front on minimal layers, aiming to let the underpainting show through and to reinforce edges through brushwork. I will definitely use things like multiply, color dodge, etc at times though if it helps reinforce what I’m doing!
Painting is mostly done here- now I just wanted to better group values to really ensure the highest contrast and thus the focal point was right at the dinosaur’s head!
Final image- a vignette effect is reinforced to ensure the highest contrast and most saturated area is right at the focal point!
And the steps! The idea is to nail a solid visual read with the initial sketch of values, and everything after is meant to reinforce that composition while increasing complexity with smaller shapes and value transitions. Better explanations in the alt text for each image!

- The colours and hair lengths of cubs are poor proxies for those features in adult cats; they change ontogenetically
- Soft tissues weren’t explored in great detail in this first study; some odd details like a lack of carpal pads should be taken with salt
