also, this is a new one for me, but have a clear single source of truth for all things in your game state. i use one big database that not only is used for saving and loading, but also all gameplay-relevant runtime data AND lots of configuration data as well

for variables, my rules of thumb are:
-no abbreviations
-names should assert some positive thing; ie avoid double negatives ("isGrounded" instead of "notJumping"
-it's ok for it to be long. we have code completion

naming things is unsexy but so so important! variables, scenes, game objects, data structures, etc. what something is named should be an instruction for what to do with it
