I wasn’t really aware there was so much resistance to engaging with such critical issues. I’m not sure how I missed it, so thank you for pointing it out to me. I appreciate it!
I understand entirely what you are saying & it’s important to facilitate discussion as the SSP is doing, but as it is a critical topic giving people 24 hours was not the best way to get participation. It isn’t an emergency in the sense that giving people a week or 2 would have a devastating impact.
You’re absolutely right I think that archaeologists tend to be more critical and I haven’t had as much contact with Classicists so I wasn’t thinking so much about that. Thank you for pointing it out to me.
I didn’t realize that it was posted. I will absolutely do that.
It is an emotive subject and 24 hours just doesn't give people much time to think about this very complicated and difficult issue.
...so more definition and information about the meeting might have quelled some of the rather unfortunate responses and arguing. It just seemed rushed. I would have been interested in attending but I didn't even see the email until after the meeting and all the various responses came in.
Well, the report came out at the beginning of the week, they announced the meeting on Thursday for Friday. Seems rushed. No information on speakers or particular topics/questions within the wider scope of the "emergency" meeting. It was obviously a topic that was going to stir up debate and...
When I teach my historical archaeology class we cover ethics and political issues, looking particularly at Gaza and Israel.
Is a rushed, reactionary meeting really going to solve the problem? Wouldn’t a well considered and thoughtful dialogue on the issues be more productive?
Re: Society for the Study of the Past “emergency meeting” on the classics listserv: : archaeologists are well aware of the ways archaeology is politicized & have long been working to combat it. The meeting feels performative & like virtue signaling.

If you are looking for a GoFundMe which has barely received any love, please consider my babysitter’s friend.
While her boyfriend was busy saving animals (most were saved thanks to their hard work!), their home burned down and all their belongings were destroyed. 💔

The story of Yusra, the Palestinian archaeologist, who discovered Tabun 1, the skull of a neanderthal, on Mount Carmel, has always stuck w/ me. I'm excited someone made a documentary about her. I hope it gets the support it needs. #archaeology #history

I'm sorry to hear that.
I hope you are doing well otherwise!
This is fabulous! Proof I shouldn't give up my dream of finding a statue of Augustus riding a velociraptor!
👀. @amchristensen.bsky.social I would be ok if we found a mosaic like this ;)
Did it succeed in being so bad it's good, at least?
