[ * ...It is vile, being a voice of reason. ]
[ * It forces another wheezing, harsh excuse for a laugh from deep within itself. ]
[ * "If you do not heed these words, carve a path that leads you to the same result. At the very least... stop talking to the darkness." ]
[ * "You know as well as I anything it grants is phantom sense." ]
[ * Which of these two it is will be left up to its audience. ]
[ * "If they care even an iota about you, you will find that the web you have woven will reach back and take your hand. It will pull you from the mire. ...But, you must seek it yourself, and speak honestly." ]
[ * "The weight of the world is not yours to bear. If you choose to persist, that is your next lesson. Learn to accept the comfort of another. Alone, you are nothing. And you are not alone." ]
[ * The certainty with which it speaks suggests it either knows, or is simply guessing with confidence. ]

[ * Its grin pitches upwards still as her emotions struggle to find purchase in her voice. ]
[ * It shakes its head, visor contorting into something between grin and grimace. ]
[ * "You will let down what the people you still have. Do you not think they deserve better?" ]
[ * "Do you not think YOU deserve better?" ]
[ * "You are above this, and you know it. So why continue as you are?" ]
[ * All at once, the noise halts, and its hand lowers. ]
[ * "You say you don't want to make it a habit? Look at yourself. Alone. Seeking solace from things that can't do anything to you. Drowning in survivor's guilt." ]
[ * "If you continue on this path, misery will swallow you whole." ]
[ * "Idiot." ]
[ * Its laughter raises from the allusion of a wheeze to a dull, throbbing sound that sounds more agony than mirth. ]
[ * "You're hurting yourself by not seeking real comfort. Therapy. Friendship. Frivolities. Lightners can seek this out and then some. The world bends for you." ]
[ * "Don't be naive. You are too young to be selfless about something so grave." ]
[ * Slowly, its hand moves forward. A finger juts out at Cass' chest. ]
[ * "But you can do it without being so pathetic. Do you care so much about being a burden the only thing you can turn is a formation of rocks?" ]
[ * Its stance requires a grain of salt, all told. It continues, ]
[ * "You are apologizing for the wrong thing." ]
[ * A laugh seeps from its throat, bubbling over in a callous, sarcastic wheeze. It hardly sounds like laughter; even further from something 'human'. ]
[ * "Be depressed. Vent if you want. I can't and won't control that." ]
[ * Instead, it signs. Leave it to the infinite darkness to speak in hands time and time again. Its motions are fluid but sluggish, to grant her the time to translate. ]
[ * "Don't you have someone better to tell this to? The cliffs can't talk back." ]
[ * "Why do you remain here?" ]
[ * Its voice has a certain harshness to it. Above all: cold. A rasp that weighs down on her in a syllable... but it is not a harshness steeped in rage, or even in opposition. She has not drawn her blade. She is not the enemy. ]
[ * So why should it be? ]
[ * Its throat closes on instinct. ]
[ * Its silence, for a time, is met with silence. Even when it breaks it's an empty tone. No strength. No bitterness. Just a soft tone with hollow words and a failed attempt at a joke. ]
[ * Slowly, its head shakes. No, it has not grown tired (though it has no reason to run). ]

[ * And its head tilts again. ]
[ * "Why do I have to keep suffering like this?" ]
[ * "Who am I even talking to, anyway?" ]
[ * An answer hovers before her; analyzing, silent. ]
[ * The void never could. The void, as it happens, is more than anything the reason for her suffering. And all the same, a figure approaches, rippling, glass-like, reflecting the suggestion of light across purple and black. ]
[ * ... ]
[ * In time, it stands before her. ]
[ * A figure shimmers in the cliffs. ]
[ * It seems to tilt its head one way, then the other, and back again as Cass speaks into what would otherwise be an uncaring, yawning abyss. Of doom and despair. Of the embrace of Death. Of drowning in the day-to-day. ]
[ * It cannot fix her. ]
[ * You felt a migraine coming on... ]
