Librarians are amazing. You can ask them about a book you think might have been a dream, but you’re pretty sure you read when you were eleven and the cover was blue…and they’ll find it! 💙📚

A picture of a rather dilapidated copy of "The picture of Dorian Gray" There is visible water damage to the cover and the plastic cover is yellowing. Obviously, not evident from the picture but there is a truly foul musty smell emanating from it!
Last week, a gentleman returned this rather dilapidated copy of this famous book to us after 50 years. He had found it in his attic!
Presumably this means there is a pristine copy somewhere in our libraries....

So much success...

It’s absolutely incredible that one of the largest Japanese-run Go servers, which has been running since 1992, is still accessed entirely via Telnet. And while most players use GUI clients that use Telnet under the hood, you can still connect manually and get ASCII graphics streamed to you
When will autocorrect realize it’s realise?
This is what I thought too.

just saw this and yeah, that's my ideal exercise routine
I ended the coffee I just made for myself.
I saw someone on here arguing the other day that you don’t own a book, you only own a license to the book and the book itself is a token of the license. I assure you, I own my books. I can lend them out. I can read them aloud to my child. I can sell them to other people. I can hit you with them
In my business we iness those buses so hard!
Three panel comic. Panel 1: scene from the movie Aliens; Ripley is in a mech suit and delivers her iconic line: “get away from her, you bitch!” Panel 2: the xenomorph queen lunges at Ripley in the robotic suit and they engage in a fight. Panel 3: later, the xenomorph queen is standing in the shower, mid wash. She says, “‘it takes one to know one, honey.’ That’s what I should have said.”
When I started a job in 2020 we quickly went into panic stations and those who could had to train staff on tech to support teaching from home. I knew no one. During one of my zoom training sessions someone left a post-it on my desk saying "You're doing great!". I have no idea who. I still have it.
To my non tech normies, PSA: when you share a link, everything after the ? is tracking. Those “query parameters” tell companies exactly how you arrived, what app you clicked, which ad or email sent you, sometimes a unique identifier tied to you. You can delete everything after the question mark.
That crow has *opinions*.
This is too flip for the occasion but I really want to know if a 21 hour negotiation meeting between Iran and the US is broken up several times a day with everyone standing around drinking filter coffee and eating bad sandwiches while exchanging small talk like every long meeting I've ever been to.
From a post:
“Told my wife to have dinner ready by 6 or I'll obliterate her entire civilization.
So anyway, she now charges me a fee to use the bathroom that used to be free, and I didn't get any dinner, but I'm pretty sure I won that exchange.”
If I think about it slowly I'd say you have one choice but if I was talking to my kids I'd say there are three choices. Weird to think about language too hard.
The horns of a trilema.
Travel is wild. Hello, stranger with laminated sheet showing tour prices. I will go on that tour where I pay a second stranger for a third stranger to take me to a seemingly sea-worthy boat so a fourth stranger can drive the boat to a fifth stranger who will show me a world heritage site. Thank you!
I was just talking to a friend today about Dolly Parton's Imagination Library - new books every month, totally for free, for kids ages 1-5.
My son was part of the program - this is a copy of the letter that came with his last book, right after his 5th birthday.
I figured it was just me and my husband on here and everything else was an illusion.
Sorry I'm late. There was an online form and I had to scroll to my birth year.
Lol. Sorry.
But you're so good Dan!
Always enjoy centrists believing despite it all we can’t do anything to hurt our alliance with the USA, as if it is actually in our interests to be a US marine and sub base, as if that is a cheap form of our defence, as if that makes us safer.
It stopped being 1942 a long time ago.
what if you could navigate unicode characters by visual similarity?
Hi @mattbevan.bsky.social. Happy Easter! Big fan, love your work. Absolutely love the black swan artwork on the bookshelf on your set. Where did that come from?
