"Public investment" vs "Wasteful Subsidy." The only problem with this clever Singer cartoon is that some people might actually not get that it’s sarcastically illustrating the incorrect perception problem, NOT telling the truth.

Just in case it actually needs to be said, the truth is the opposite.

"the province has other more transparent and efficient revenue generation options."

The City does not.

Amid inflation, rapid growth, and uncertainty, a significant burden is being downloaded onto cities—Calgary in particular.

Thanks for the great analysis,
@abmunis.bsky.social!

The literal translation of compassion is "feeling with". In a world obsessed with division, we can all choose to be "with". To intentionally sit "with" those who are not like us and carry different perspectives.

In a fear and anger arms race... choose compassion.

It feels great to see ABCD being embraced by The City of Calgary as a prominent lens for their work in communities.

Council Compensation Review Committee City of Calgary Council Compensation Review Committee (CCRC) conducts impartial reviews of compensation for Council members and Councillor's assistants.

Friendly reminder that we have a Council Compensation Review Committee here at The City of Calgary. Any system that enables politicians to make decisions about their own salaries is going to be gamed.

100% they are and all for political gain. Apparently they are going to be able to solve redevelopment opposition (smart growth) by… aligning with it!?

Reductionist and unhelpful however true it is. There is a WIDE delta between more sustainable development practices and ones that exploit our natural and economic systems.

Yikes, we have some serious educational work to do about the realities of living in a major centre.

The correction would provoke more of the same and extend the meetings further... understand the frustration. The process absolutely feels flawed and favours privilege.

I don’t want a different outcome. Just a different track for the conversation.

100% being inflamed by elected’s capitalizing on the public mistrust. There is something to be said to take a step in the direction to meet someone where they are to educate and empathize and move the convo forward vs. taking the step to bolster one’s political future aligning with frustration.

I worry the fight is creating more opposition, especially as the language becomes more personal and accusatory.

Yea, the argument’s are not even from my perspective, apologies if that is what I at danger of communicating. What I don’t love is the increasing entrenchment and typecasting going back and forth…

Racist, etc was definitely being thrown around… you know how I feel and vote. The chasm is what concerns me a the life that rezoning suspicions will continue to live w/o a different approach.

The language from both "sides" often crosses into othering and casting accusations about the motivations of those they are debating. We need to elevate these conversations.

Listening to the Trellis application at Public Hearing and the gap between the worlds of those "for" and "against" is vast. Can't help but feel a little defeated by the chasm. Local impact and kids pleading for their local park vs. caring for vulnerable in our society.

I am feeling good about the Admin recommendations, built upon your excellent work. Looking forward to the conversation.

Municipal Comparisons - Main Breaks
Municipal Comparisons - Main Breaks YouTube video by Evan Spencer

At Council this week, we received an important update on the work The City is doing on the Bearspaw watermain break. I found this slide and portion of the presentation especially helpful:

Cllr. Pootmans is one of the most genuine people I have had the pleasure of working with. He was always ready to help and direct and did so gently while constantly speaking affirmation to call the best out of his colleagues. I will miss him immensely.
