A fire deficit persists across diverse North American forests despite recent increases in area burned - Nature Communications Across many North American forests, recent years with exceptional area burned are not unprecedented when considering the multi-century perspective offered by fire-scarred trees. Nevertheless, abundant...

(It sounds basic but it is surprising how often PhDs I interview can’t do one of the minimal things, even when they can go extremely deep on another part!)

Minimal passing for my (industry r&d) interview question is knowing how meiosis works, how to process sequencing data from fastq to vcf, and how calculate and interpret a z score. Also need to write clean r or python, decent Unix skills, beginner git, and some cloud or cluster experience.

Causal interpretations of family GWAS in the presence of heterogeneous effects bioRxiv - the preprint server for biology, operated by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a research and educational institution

Family-based GWAS have become the gold standard for assessing causal genetic effects. They’re often said to offer an unbiased estimate of the average causal effect (ATE) of an allele or PGS. Here, we (Carl Veller & @mollyprz.bsky.social ) evaluate such statements.

On my way to #ASHG2023! Come by the cancer genetics poster session on Thursday 3-5 to see some of our work at Myriad Genetics on a new test to detect cancer recurrence with cell-free DNA.

Second the votes for desolation wilderness. Park at Loon lake and head towards rock bound lake. From there it’s granite high country with lots of options. Requires a permit but never had to reserve in the past. Great trout fishing. Emigrant wilderness out of Crabtree trailhead is also excellent.

Anyone else going to ASHG this year? Just registered. Got a tumor cfDNA poster to present but I’m going to sneak off to the evolution talks when I can.
