Wow. What a graph. Climate impacts are heavily skewed to Global South countries, incl Vanuatu & Philippines from our region in top 10 for the decade. But rich countries also make a showing with big climate impacts.

The energy transition is a physical reality and is accelerating in many countries, regardless of the political course in the US. Almost 200 countries have continued to work on climate action during Trump I - in cooperation with many US states - and we expect this to continue during his second term/8
We'll also see additional fora to #UNFCCC gain relevance (again), including the Ministerial on Climate Action (MoCA) founded in response to Trump I /7
We'll see a shift in the power balance in international climate policy. The #EU's role as a credible global climate leader and supporter of multilateralism would be all the more important. China already signaled at #COP29 its willingness to take a leading role in international climate policy /6
What does this mean for international climate policy? The #climatecrisis is not over just because a climate denier is in the White House. Mulilateral climate action is key to solving this global crisis without borders - and it will continue without Trump. /5
What does this mean for the US? The country is losing its influence on one of the most important international forums and its decisions for climate action. Tump is damaging the US and ceding political influence and competitive advantages to other countries. /4
What will be immediate effects? 1. World’s second biggest-emitting country would no longer have to submit NDCs, 2. US does not have to report on its emissions each year, 3. Less climate finance due to weaker legal responsibilities to provide climate finance to developing countries /3
Until the withdrawal becomes effective, the US remains in the Paris Agreement and continues to fully participate in all activities under it. This means, the US will still be part of the Agreement at #COP30. Afterwards, the US would no longer be a Party and become just an observer /2
When can the US leave? #ParisAgreement Art. 28 defines that a "withdrawal takes effect upon expiry of one year from the date of receipt by the Depositary of the notification of withdrawal, or on such later date as may be specified in the notification of withdrawal" /1
The #USA will withdraw from the #UNFCCC #ParisAgreement (again) as just published by the White House.
