Hello Salt Spring Island,
I will be visiting you, and reading at the Library on April 9th. This will be Scar/city's first national poetry month appearance. Thank you to Brian Day for running the Poetry Open Mic reading series. And thank you to the Library for hosting us.
The book is coming home.
I wrote a guest blog post for the publisher's blog where tell a bit of backstory and what inspired the book as it comes home to the neighbourhood.

An impromptu stop by Book Warehouse led to chatting, signing books, and taking photos. *Scar/city* was between Mary Oliver and *Crushed Wild Mint*. A block later ran into a neighbour drinking coffee outside Elysian Coffeeshop on the corner of Broadway and Ash, and we talked about book.
"Is This an Accident or an Illness? is a deep-hearted memoir full of uncomfortable reflections and questions...Best read under a tree, if you can." Read Jessica Poon's review of @danielaelza.bsky.social's debut prose collection on BC Review at thebcreview.ca/2026/02/10/2... #memoir #bcreview
lovely view of the book. <3
I read this first review of my debut essay collection with trepidation ... as it is a first. I love how the reviewer pulled through a number of threads and picked up on the unifying themes. Thank you Jessica Poon for the review of this close to my heart book. ❤ thebcreview.ca/2026/02/10/2...
Another view of Scar/city.
"These poems are meant to disrupt, interrupt, and unsettle you just as the threat of losing one’s home unsettles... It highlights the slipperiness of language, of politicians and planners who try to 'torture you by obfuscation'. ❤

Scar/city made the BC Review year-end reviewer picks:
"These poems—on the tough topic of community and the forces that break it—dance through the streets with characteristic pitch-perfect timing, self-awareness, and sheer lyric exuberance."
