I can’t get to it right now, but I bookmarked for when I have a chance to work on Skylight again!

Sure but I also feel like Bluesky is a great place in general to share ideas.

There are so many great people building here, we’re just so one of many!

For sure that’s often how they are used but I think there is an additional degree of idiosyncratic behavior it allows.

There is a line where it goes from being content-first to commentary-first.

A subreddit is like a single comment section with multiple posts. Cross-posting is a primary movement.

I couldn’t agree more about the need for a communities feature.

Even Threads has one and IMO it’s a major reason they did so well in 2025.

They aren’t mutually exclusive with feeds or hashtags, they are a fundamentally different primitive.

You weren’t kidding about that story! I wasn’t prepared to be so emotional at 11am

That was beautiful 😭

Yes but you should probably read Paul Graham too if you’re going to make a software company.

All of my mistakes have been made while I was ignoring some piece of advice he gave.

I like thinking of it as the user is always right about how they feel about their experience.

No more, no less.

Thanks for having me on @mmccue.bsky.social! It was a pleasure ☺️

Huge shout out to @flipboard.com for platforming Open Social voices! If you’re looking for an incredible podcast catalog that deep dives into Open Social, I can’t recommend the Dot Social podcast more! 🙌🏽

1000% we under appreciate how much proprietary AI/ML have been working for these big companies.

Intelligent systems have been their monopoly and now it’s a near commodity.

Exactly! The web was what made it good.

Same thing will be true if someone gets PMF here it will be because of atproto not in spite of it.

Okay but what do you think?

When did Bluesky build a browser?

4 weeks ago 2 0 1 0

Again pushing past semantics.

If someone came up to the both of us and said they were building an “atproto browser” we’d have two different reactions.

You’d dislike the idea.

I’d like the idea.

That difference of opinion is what’s interesting

I don’t think that’s the right metric to use — their website copy wasn’t their top of funnel. They don’t have to tell you they’re a website you’re already on their website.

There was no ambiguity that the online part was what made them different.

Their slogan was “the world’s largest bookstore”

“Atproto should not be part of the byline of your product”

This is what we’re debating, right?

I think the web was part of the byline for many of these companies — “online bookstore” comes to mind.

I bet if someone finds PMF atproto will be that fundamental to their product offering.

Counter argument: if atproto is just an implementation detail then you aren’t making a viable product.

Historically, people knew they were using new tech. It was obvious because the product was unprecedented.

People learned to use the internet just to get access to the products.

Up with @pfrazee.com and @reedharmeyer.bsky.social on a panel where we'll be competing to be the biggest knucklehead on atproto - it's an honor just to be nominated etc
