The fact that Mamdani just seems like a cheerful normal guy who's policies are things like "we're going to tax second homes to fund pothole repairs" or whatever and yet this generates panicked responses like "This is basically Stalin's great purge turned up to eleven" is... telling. It tells things.
Across an expanse of 5 lanes a young woman carting groceries waits in a turning lane to cross the street to her apartment complex.
Bad road design is putting this woman in danger. It’s a third of a mile to the nearest crosswalk and 2/3 mile to the nearest ped signal. A student was hit in this same location a few yrs ago & the police said to the newspaper: “I hope he learned his lesson.”
It may seem paradoxical but a key to accomplishing (1) will be to deflate the psychological importance that Americans attach to their voting decision. Casting a particular ballot in a particular election needs to become understood as a small practical matter, not a titanic moment of self-expression.

A thing Peru and California have in common: electoral systems where only the top two candidates advance to a final round, no matter how small their vote share. So now Peruvians get to choose between the daughter of a former dictator and an ultraconservative. Maybe not the best system?
