I’m going to back them and figure out a community to run this for. Maybe a @dwebyvr.org / #CommonsComputer project.

They are working with Co-Op Cloud, a Docker Swarm based cloud infra system built by @autonomic.zone that I still haven’t installed myself bmannconsulting.com/notes/co-op-...

Resist Tech Monopolies: Community Photo Hosting SeaGL 2025 Resist Tech Monopolies (RTM) is a collective that aims to build & support community alternatives to big tech. One of our projects is a self-hosted and distributed photo sharing application that will be an alternative to proprietary platforms like Google and iCloud Photos. Alternatives already exist; however, there are several barriers to more people adopting these tools, including cost of physical infrastructure, required tech skills, time and energy, and a lack of desired features. In this talk we present the case for resisting tech monopolies like Google Photos, go through the technical details of how we set up a community photo hosting platform, and share our lessons learned on the process.

If you make it to @SeaGL this year, don't miss the RTM talk (https://pretalx.seagl.org/2025/talk/XE8TL3/ and the @coopcloud talk (https://pretalx.seagl.org/2025/talk/BXX88L/

So much of the internet down with the AWS issues. A painful reminder that even some more ethical services rely on Amazon. Who’s got alternatives to recommend? I’ve spotted @autonomic.zone’s Co-op Cloud for small tech providers.

Capsul - Capsul

Thanks for mentioning us!

Co-op Cloud is actually a cooperatively governed software project that helps collectives spin up and manage their own infrastructure.

If you're looking for non-corporate alternative to AWS run by rad people, we recommend our friends at capsul.org :)

The course is titled “Solidarity Infrastructures” and taught by Meghna Mahadevan and Max Fowler with Io Hushpuppie. Description reads: “Build infrastructure outside a techno-capitalist worldview.”

Text on a dreamy purple and yellow background describes the class exploring topics like the slow web, organic internet, data sovereignty, minimal computing, and anti-computing. It highlights how community tech and cultural organizing intersect. The text emphasizes collective values and ecological grounding over traditional high/low-tech dichotomies. At the bottom, there's an oval photo of a person using a wood-burning tool on a craft board with trees in the background.

Most communities have zero experience or capital to self host anything. That's why they all end up on discord.

What are we doing to fix that?

What if your community could pool storage to self host it's own images? What if the network of compute that runs the service was maintained cooperatively?

To the folks who insist worker ownership isn't compatible with "human nature"—we have empirical research over decades that shows the exact opposite. Worker ownership and participation are linked to increases in satisfaction and productivity. Psychological ownership is a real, studied phenomenon.

A side-by-side view of the same account from Bluesky (left) and Mastodon (right). Both screenshots show the same profile picture, header image, and identical description.

The Bluesky username shows up as @chaos.distraction.engineer, while on the Mastodon side it's @chaos@distraction.engineer.

Hm. A "proof of concept" pull request that adds "preliminary ActivityPub support" to Bluesky.

As far as we can tell, there are no plans for AI integration in the upstream project, and definitely no intention on our side to integrate AI in our hosted version :)

But hey, you can't be too safe🤞
