The society and democracy challenge of AI is a climate and energy challenge (disaster) as @melgregg.bsky.social points out with local data…

I'm pretty sure Rosie would absolutely love cake.
Advocates hope recent verdicts against social media platforms will build momentum for bigger changes in Silicon Valley.
What’s up? Well, Bangor made the national news for its low temps today and a colleague and I got called out by certain news outlets for an article on media ed we wrote three years ago. Just sitting here waiting for the other shoe to drop y’all. Oh and wearing longjohns. #lifein2025
Having an excellent time at the #ccas2025 dean’s conference in St. Louis. Early morning run: check. Preconferencd workshop: check. Pe-Day 1 gym workout: check.
Anyone else have so many meetings you’re not sure when to get your work done? Yeah. Here is a daily moment of zen (or three) in an attempt to help me (and you) remember to breathe
Look. It’s been a long day. Long week even. Be like Josie: get your favorite skunk toy, play with it, let it fall on your head, and then take a nap #easypeasy
A timeline cleanser: Josie asleep on our bed. You’re welcome
Day 4 of conferencing on the west coast and I guess I’m no longer fighting the fact that my body insists on living on East coast time. Good morning #AEJMC25
Best of CTAM starts in Salon 4 at 4:45pm, come one, come all! (Well maybe not all. The room is only so big). Come lots of you! #AEJMC25
Come to Salon 8 to say hi! As the incoming Head for CT&M, I’m excited meet you. Plus, there’s ice cream and popcorn. Just sayin’ #aejmc25
Another gorgeous run this morning. #AEJMC25
Still time to come to the 8am teaching panel, “Journalism
Pedagogy in an era of mistrust.” Salon 10, behind the DIG coffee bar. Caffeinate up and join the discussion! #aejmc25
Early morning run with a fellow #AEJMC25 attendee. The view of the water and the fog around the Oakland bay bridge was amazing.10/10 would recommend #RunAEJ
i am doing a red eye back. Believe it or not- I love them. I sleep really well and airports are quiet in the evenings. But I am weird :)
So much this. Dreading the flight from BOS.
Meee! Are you running again then? Talk at the #runningwithpresidents at the ICA was you were in for surgery:).
I never realize how big this country is until I try to get to the west coast. A 4-hr bus ride followed by a 6.5hr flight to get from BGR to SFO. oy #aejmc25
I spend about 25 hrs weeek offline. I will use my phone when people text me, but no email, no social media, no news. Lately, it has been the thing that keeps me sane. I realize ignoring the news for a day is privilege but oh boy do I recommend it. Now. What battles are we fighting tonight?
As we talk about the cheerful insanity of Australia's Social Media Ban again this morning, here's your periodical reminder that the book it's inspired by - The Anxious Generation - is hogwash.
Not just me saying it, but this little journal you might have heard of: Nature.

This summer I learned that all I really need to be happy is water and sun. Like a houseplant. Y’all, I am a houseplant.
For this summer's online class, I recorded the video on "Rules about AI use" in a pool hall & asked students if the background was AI-generated (husband was playing a tournament). Surprising find: All students think it's AI-generated. Then again: Who would actually record a video in a pool hall?
Sure, but most of my political scientist friends here in the US would argue that they are a social science. So I do wonder if this just a linguistic issue rather than an actual academic distinction?
A very fond goodbye to #ica25. It was amazing as usual (maybe even more so), and I’m sad to have to leave! For those staying for Day 5: be sure to check out @saramgrady.bsky.social and my paper on enjoyment this morning!
Lots of interesting takeaways from the MADEU24 project incl finding that the hostile misinformation effect - whereby ppl believe misinformation is mostly directed at their political side- is stronger as political interest party liking, and ideological extremity increases. #ica25
While I’m learning about misinformation and fact checking at #ica25 my husband took our dog bouldering up a local mountain back in Maine. I am biased but dang that is cute.
I have water, coffee, and Tylenol. Say the word (or which back row you’re in) #solidarity
3️⃣rd edition #ica25 #RunningWithPresidents. ☀️ 5k and great group.

Maine has been amazing me every step of the way this year.
At the "Science under fire" session at #ica25: Great speakers and excellent takeaways: Create connections with decision makers; don't be afraid to dig into endowment to keep research going; communicate about yr research and why it matters; and keep on keeping on it. This matters.
