There are no pure cultures – we have always been global | Aeon Essays All of our religions, stories, languages and norms were muddled and mixed through mobility and exchange throughout history

Globalisation didn’t begin in the 1990s, or even in the past millennia. The tale of globalisation is written across human history. So why do we keep getting the story so wrong? This Essay was one of our most read by you in 2025. Revisit it here:

If your annual income is $100,000 (a good salary by European standards), then you'd earn a million dollars in ten years. But to earn a trillion dollars, you'd need to work for ten million years--which is about 30 times longer than our species has existed.

China’s Marshall Plan Is Running on Batteries Beijing’s green energy projects are bringing jobs, growth and cheap electricity to the developing world.

"Beijing is offering cheap, clean power, employment, trade and a route to prosperity. Washington is offering tariffs, policy chaos, White nationalist memes and South Korean workers in shackles after a raid on an EV battery factory." @davidfickling.bsky.social www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...

The War on Truth Heats Up (just in time for Constitution Day) Hannah Arendt famously wrote, “The ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convinced Nazi or the convinced Communist, but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (i.e., the real...

Kirk's murder is being weaponized to corral us into a smaller and smaller arena of speech, and it is our job to refuse to be confined, to keep speaking out, to keep making irreverent jokes, supporting progressive voices, chastising the high-profile cowards, and talking among ourselves.

The right is insisting political violence is an inherently left-wing problem. From Trump to his 2024 U.S Senate endorsee Blake Masters: “The political aggression and taste for violence against innocent people are all coming from the left.”

But here are the facts, as per the Anti-Defamation League.

This has been worse than “both sides!”
Not just claims that Charlie Kirk calling for the murder of Democrats and Democrats denouncing the murder of Charlie Kirk are equal, but that Kirk did politics the right way, so we’d be better off if more acted like him and if Dems were more supportive of that.

Our abdication of the field in both green energy and in science and technology more broadly – read up on battery technology coming out of China – is going to ensure that this century, which could have been ours to lead, will belong to China. Entirely an own goal.

* Honest, open dialogue between differing perspectives is a core value worth preserving.

* The form of such dialogue, without the honesty or openness, has been co-opted by bad-faith actors as a cynical strategy to garner respectability.

* There are plenty of suckers eager to fall for the ruse.

In all seriousness, I'd love to see a reporter try to get comments from all of these people about their initial impulse to declare a literal war on half of their fellow citizens and to see if any of them regret it, apologized for it or learned anything at all from it.

A parody of the Gadsden flag: bright yellow background with a coiled snake in the shape of an ouroboros, biting its own tail. The snake rests on a patch of green grass. Instead of the usual "DON’T TREAD ON ME," the caption below reads in bold black letters: "OOPS, I TREADED ON MYSELF." Generated with Bluesky AltText, a CustomGPT.

You're living through a major technological revolution right now and it has nothing to do with AI.

The United States is in danger of missing it and getting left behind because our corrupt President wants us to be buyers-of-last-resort for fossil fuels owned by his paymasters in KSA and Russia.

A Neurologist Investigates His Own Musical Hallucinations Neurologist Bruce Dobkin started hearing a phantom choir singing on a loop after he received a cochlear implant. He’s not the only one.

After neurologist Bruce Dobkin got a cochlear implant, he started to hear a choir singing “The Star Spangled Banner” on repeat.

Turns out he is not alone. Audiologists surveying patients with hearing impairment have found that anywhere from 4% to 20% experience musical hallucinations.

Can you see circles or rectangles? And does the answer depend on where you grew up? | Anil Seth We may believe we see the world exactly as it is – but as studies of optical illusions show, it’s far more complex than that, says cognitive and computational neuroscience professor Anil Seth

How things seem is not how they are.
it might seem as though we see the world exactly as it is; as if our senses are transparent windows through which the world pours itself directly into our mind. But the world we experience is always an active construction, a kind of “controlled hallucination”
