As the Nobel Prize laureate Françoise Barré-Sinoussi has said, a generation free of HIV/AIDS is possible. Lenacapavir is the closest we have ever been to making her vision a reality. The question now should not be if the world can afford to support it – it’s if we can afford not to.
Those at greatest risk of infection – adolescent girls and young women, men who have sex with men, sex workers, and others – are those who stand to benefit the most.
Just as dolutegravir represented a major opportunity for people living with HIV a decade ago, lenacapavir – the twice-yearly injectable prevention drug – provides us with the potential to stop new infections in their tracks.
Resourcing this work is critical to enabling us to achieve international goals and to safeguard hard won progress. Innovations have been crucial in this progress.
Sustained – and increased – success against these challenges will depend on our collective ability to continue to accelerate access to innovative solutions that improve care while driving efficiencies that help stretch every dollar further.
Over the past two decades the Global Fund, Unitaid and many other global health actors have worked in close collaboration to transform testing, treatment and prevention for HIV, TB and malaria – saving millions of lives and billions of dollars in the process.
As a close partner in this fight, we are grateful to all the countries and supporters who have stepped up in solidarity with the millions of people in low- and middle-income countries where these global health crises are most acute.

Lenacapavir can change the course of HIV prevention, but only if all who need it can access it. With CHAI, Wits RHI and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Unitaid secured a US$40 annual price, with generics expected by 2027. A major step toward equity and ending HIV.
