The STFC total must stay the same, so if the cuts are not to grants, then they need to be to something else

I wouldn't characterise this as good news, but it is encouraging that the community pushback is being appreciated higher up

This may be encouraging—a commitment to no further cuts to astronomy, particle physics & nuclear physics (although there have already been big cuts)?

Interesting to see the explicit confirmation that Drayson partitions, that protected research finds, were removed for geopolitical reasons

Finally some clarity on the #STFC budget: it's falling in real terms as UKRI spending rises. A conscious decision has been made to decrease UK funding for fundamental physics, despite all the evidence that our blue skies research is key for economic growth.
