Thank you to @genoways.bsky.social for the reminder (on another platform) that it's been 12 years today since we lost Matthew Power, a remarkable writer who mentored and encouraged so many of us in magazines/longform. I wish I was still reading his new work, but here is some of his best:

This is an important story by @genoways.bsky.social -- Haitian workers vote 99% "YES" to strike at a meatpacking plant at the same time the end of TPS and their possible deportation hangs over their heads. Intersection of union power and the anti-immigrant crusade is laid bare right here.
The largely immigrant workforce at JBS's flagship U.S. plant, in Greeley, Colorado, is refusing to back down after accusing the company of poor working conditions. Reporting by Ted Genoways for FERN and Mother Jones. Photography by Maryanne Andrei.

In doing some research, I was reminded this weekend, that when some people say "No one saw these high prices coming" for things like beef, that those people were wrong.
In fact, @genoways.bsky.social did. You were warned folks.

Thank you, Ted Genoways @genoways.bsky.social and all the Switchyard folks. Please read the whole incredible issue, including my story, at the link: www.switchyardmag.com/issue-5
This makes me happy to no end—not least because I've had the pleasure of explaining to my mom how I'm known among Whitman scholars.
Thanks so much, Jeff. This one has been tough, but it feels important.
On January 24, 2025, Switchyard gathered dozens of writers, radio producers, nonprofit leaders, educators, and thinkers at their headquarters in Tulsa to collectively imagine—and reckon with—what the next four years will be like. Proud to hve been a part of it.

Such an honor to chat with @genoways.bsky.social the other night about his seamless new biography of Jose Cuervo, who endured no small number of extraordinary political and economic trials to keep the family spirit flowing. Ted's writing is just gorgeous to boot: bookshop.org/p/books/tequ...
Kroger frequently overcharges customers by listing expired sales prices on the shelves but then ringing the products up at the regular prices at checkout.

Looking forward to this, esp. after hearing the story of Jorge Salles starting El Tequileño after working for Jose Cuervo.

Fun visit to the agave fields of Mexico with @tibizea.bsky.social and @genoways.bsky.social
Thanks so much, Blake. I hope you love it!
"Ted Genoways has dug deep... His densely packed biography of José Cuervo Labastida y Flores is a textured account that details Cuervo’s relationships with rival tequila producers, and his efforts to survive in a politically unstable era."

In @nytopinion.nytimes.com:
President Trump’s Mexico agenda centers on what he calls border “chaos,” Ted Genoways writes in a guest essay. “How ironic, then, that his proposed solution of tariffs is bound to generate chaos at the border by creating powerful incentives for black market trade.”
Solid analysis here but holy smoked agave the story of tequila makers forming Mexico’s first cartels responding to WWI import bans, the boon in smuggling during prohibition, violence in sleepy border towns…I’ll never see a margarita the same way again. Congrats on the book. Somebody option this asap
It really does almost seem that way.
