Matthew Power · Longform Articles written by Matthew Power on Longform.

Thank you to @genoways.bsky.social for the reminder (on another platform) that it's been 12 years today since we lost Matthew Power, a remarkable writer who mentored and encouraged so many of us in magazines/longform. I wish I was still reading his new work, but here is some of his best:

This is an important story by @genoways.bsky.social -- Haitian workers vote 99% "YES" to strike at a meatpacking plant at the same time the end of TPS and their possible deportation hangs over their heads. Intersection of union power and the anti-immigrant crusade is laid bare right here.

Opinion | Trump Said Democrats Will Take Away Your Hamburgers. He’s the One Who Might. (Published 2024)

In doing some research, I was reminded this weekend, that when some people say "No one saw these high prices coming" for things like beef, that those people were wrong.

In fact, @genoways.bsky.social did. You were warned folks.

This makes me happy to no end—not least because I've had the pleasure of explaining to my mom how I'm known among Whitman scholars.

Book Review: ‘Tequila Wars,’ by Ted Genoways In a new history, Ted Genoways explores the dramatic life of an enigmatic figure who revolutionized his country’s spirits industry.

"Ted Genoways has dug deep... His densely packed biography of José Cuervo Labastida y Flores is a textured account that details Cuervo’s relationships with rival tequila producers, and his efforts to survive in a politically unstable era."

Opinion | Trump’s Tariffs Would Unleash Chaos at the Border Trump’s threat to impose tariffs on Mexico undermines his stated intention to eliminate the “chaos” at America’s southern border.

In @nytopinion.nytimes.com:

President Trump’s Mexico agenda centers on what he calls border “chaos,” Ted Genoways writes in a guest essay. “How ironic, then, that his proposed solution of tariffs is bound to generate chaos at the border by creating powerful incentives for black market trade.”

Solid analysis here but holy smoked agave the story of tequila makers forming Mexico’s first cartels responding to WWI import bans, the boon in smuggling during prohibition, violence in sleepy border towns…I’ll never see a margarita the same way again. Congrats on the book. Somebody option this asap

Some thoughts on Trump's tariffs and the history of how trying to limit the importation of tequila a century ago only led to violence—and increased popularity for tequila.

Great article by my friend @genoways.bsky.social. What does the early 20th century history of tequila tell us about tariffs, illegal trade, the border, and Cuervo? I can’t wait for his book! www.nytimes.com/2025/04/02/o...
