Virginia First Gentleman Adam Spanberger clipped into his pedals at the front of the pack Friday morning and rolled through Rosemont alongside dozens of Alexandria families — the biggest turnout the Brooks Bike Bus has ever seen.

Communication skills!!! We are a car-lite family. One car for 2 adults and 2 teens. It takes so much negotiation- not just about who is driving, but who has the car. It is not easy.

Today, I taught a young Afghani girl to ride a bike. I talked with some Afghani boys who speak Dari about Tik Tok, AI, and alphabets. I evaluated 10 bikes for repairs. And now, I am headed to a yoga retreat in Canada!

Mental health- once you get past the fear of getting killed by cars, exercise helps your brain and heart.

Academics- again, exercise helps your brain work better for learning more.

Parking a bike is a lot easier than parking a car!!

Community and friendship- easier to stop and see people and neighbors. Building connections.

Discovery- find money or other treasures on the ground. Hidden murals in alleys.

I will help!! It’s my job. I have a bike you can practice on. You just have to come over to the West End.

We really are through the looking glass when the mode of transportation that requires you to purchase a vehicle that costs tens of thousands of dollars, routinely put gas in it, and pay to maintain it, is the “non-privileged” mode.
