One thing about last night’s election outcome is voters were clear spending more on our schools was OK. Paying teacher’s well and improving school performance for all kids needs to be a strategic priority for the City Council and School Board.

It is well documented that lower income, disadvantaged kids start school behind others and have many fewer home resources to help them learn and catch up. That will be apparent in the new rankings.

Sure, we also need to lobby the state for more help and support, but they historically ignore those requests. It is really a question of our community values. Does every kid get a shot at success or do we just let the lower income kids fall further behind. Big challenge that we need to face.
