This is brutal. The broad American public perception is that importers to the US bore the cost of tariffs, when the vast majority of the extra costs were passed on to American consumers and manufacturing firms, who will never see that money again.

My guess is this is all going to happen much faster than our electric utilities are ready for it. Passenger electric vehicles offer a mildly better service, whereas electric trucks can dramatically reduce per tonne costs and could enter really quickly.
Once they are broadly available, BEV freight trucks will save so much money, provide so much value, they will enter the market really fast, adding to already strained generation & transmission. *When* they charge will be the key thing until deeper charging networks are available.
And guess what happens once the Chinese have made enough electric freight trucks for themselves, paying off the cost of the factories? They will export them to the rest of the world at the cost of variable inputs
(materials, energy, labour), i.e., super cheap.

My general impression is that developing country demand for these technologies is undercounted and underforecast. Existing Chinese "overcapacity" sets the stage for aggressive marketing and pricing, which really helps developing country buyers participate.

A positive approach to O&G production & climate would be to reduce fugitive methane to low levels (<0.5%), electrify as much of it as we can (compressors, devices, lower heating needs), & apply CCS to blue H2 production for refining & upgrading, all high impact actions with low to moderate costs.
The reality is Canada’s oil and gas community has never been happy with any sort of climate constraint, and is using the opportunity of the Trump crisis to try to destroy as much of it as they can while they can.
I’m glad @maxfawcett.bsky.social has the energy for this. Suffice to say our industrial carbon price was designed to reduce competitiveness impacts, specifically with a US with little climate policy. Emitters only pay the full price on a small portion of their GHGs, and very low average price.
I’m not sure “mad” is the word, profoundly, ignorantly incapable of assigning agency and thought to their adversaries, more likely.
