Great piece. Short form content has levelled the playing field but I'm seeing “the promotional method is defining the timbre of the work.” increasingly applied to games.

Anyway, very much looking forward to @minskworks.bsky.social's Honcho, both for having a great sense of place and matching aesthetic, and for rejecting the whole hypermasculine mechanic culture entirely.

On an artistic level, I wanted a character that reflected the reductive viewpoint of ‘onnanoko shashin’ and to explore why Japanese male figures in power feared young women.
I think self-inserting loses this kind of intention, but ultimately who am I to say how someone should engage with my work?
I’m not dunking or assuming. I just don’t have the budget to animate and rig another body type.
The character has some emotes and tiredness tied to their eyes so I still need an entity in the world for players to see in the rear view mirror.

Hiromix's photography saw her work labelled as "girl photography" in the mid 90s. Sort of a condescending dismissal from the male critiques.
The protag gender for a game about being an unruly start-up is a conscious one. Removing that sees the work lose its flavour, like bland tofu. lol
I spent too much time trying to make the game look "expensive" by adding full body awareness for the player, and most players just want the option to hide their body (which this does).
Makes sense in hindsight - I do personally prefer silent protags.
