I don't know why this is so hard for some people to grasp. If we extend our use of fossil gas, rather than going all-out for grid batteries, heat pumps and induction hobs, we extend our dependence on *foreign* sources of gas, regardless of whether we also use the UK's last remaining reserves. 🧵

pooch!
If it’s such a ‘gold mine’ why did the 14 year period of the last Conservative government, throughout which it pursued a policy of issuing licenses and maximising oil and gas production, end up being defined by austerity and the worst wage growth since the Napoleonic era?
Geopolitics update: pleased to announce that after six weeks of furious struggle I have successfully removed my penis from the penis trap which was labelled 'OBVIOUS PENIS TRAP'. This is a major strategic victory for me. No questions from the press
Magnificent. Thank you. Can we use this in Drop Us A Line if the moment comes up?
Hilarious how for years serious people have said that you can't rely on renewables because they are prone to disruptions in supply www.ft.com/content/19f1...
Badenoch & 4 family members spent 6 days at a residence owned by Neil Record, who chairs Net Zero Watch, is life vice-president of the Institute of Economic Affairs, and sits on the advisory board of the Prosperity Institute, a think tank founded by the Legatum Group, the firm that co-owns GB News.
1. Electrify everything
2. Build wind, solar and storage
3. Leave the North Sea oil & gas at the bottom of the ocean
Wind & solar are currently producing 65% of Britain's electricity. Meanwhile, renewables now offer 30,000 more UK jobs than oil and gas. Meanwhile, we're in a climate emergency. Meanwhile, we're in a fossil fuel supply crisis. Meanwhile, the Tories and Reform want to scrap Net Zero. grid.iamkate.com
for a moment I thought you meant DESNZ had released a video game and was rather excited by the prospect
Whoa
I know people are sceptical about journalism right now but this is the kind of story that takes weeks to get to the bottom of. I hope people see the value in what we do
Any word on the cost of batteries over there?
Both are good arguments for solar + storage, mind
Increasingly unclear to me whether I am watching the news or the new Dune trailer
Oh man. What a joy. You got to see it in a cinema? I love that film so much.
This is not just a climate crisis. This... is an M&S climate crisis.
That episode did come out today...
Yes, we do, and more in the, er, pipeline. Why?
Heat pumps are the most efficient heating technology ever invented.
They harvest and compress pre existing heat in the air, ground or water and transport it where it is needed.
That energy is all around us. It does not have to pass through the Strait of Hormuz or any other geopolitical chokepoint.
Can this be a solution?
Lots of columnists in the, er, heritage media are selling the 'let's just drill the North Sea to solve all our energy problems' horseshit. We covered why it's horseshit on this week's Page 94 - plus a very entertaining bit from Adam on UK/US press ops. Listen now: www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8ky...
This just in: Sun agrees to release infinity million barrels of sunshine every morning
Latest blog is on how if we are facing a full blown energy crisis - and it looks like we are - then it is mad and self-defeating to ignore the clean technologies and climate policies that can have the most immediate positive effect. www.businessgreen.com/blog-post/45...
It is extremely difficult to construct a practical case against this position. Net Zero is now as much about patriotism as it is about climate change.
Analysis: Why clean energy will cut UK gas imports by (much) more than North Sea drilling
The latest debate over new licenses has been lacking one key ingredient: Perspective
Here's our take in chart form – and I'm happy to debate the numbers

UK's Climate Change Committee has some of the smartest minds working on modeling the costs of how to get to net zero. And this assessment is likley to be applicable to any fossil-fuel import dependent country.

Heating oil prices in the UK have trebled in a week. 2 million homes, no price cap protection, no warning.
Heat pumps + solar are multiple times more efficient, don’t require an oil tank and oil deliveries and are an insurance against such frightening price spikes.
I am available for questions.
