We donโ€™t drink ๐Ÿฉธwe study it ๐Ÿง›๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ TikTok video by SwaySauce๐ŸŒถ๏ธ

Between experiments, taking or teaching classes, and preparing manuscripts, grad student and postdoc "pathogen hunters" in my lab (here Megan, Consuelo, Siri) + their videographer (Hunter) seem to be having plenty of funโ€”they don't drink๐Ÿฉธโ€”they study its innate immune properties

Robert Redford (RIP) survived a childhood bout of polio though bedridden for 2 weeks

In 2014, he directed a short film on the architecture and mission of La Jolla's Salk Instituteโ€”honoring founder Jonas Salk, inventor of the polio vaccine that has saved countless lives, and architect Louis Kahn

The Gutting of Americaโ€™s Medical Research: Here Is Every Canceled or Delayed N.I.H. Grant Some cuts have been starkly visible, but the countryโ€™s medical grant-making machinery has also radically transformed outside the public eye.

Cuts to Science w/o Congressional approval have affected research on Alzheimerโ€™s, cancer and substance use and many other studies at institutions across the country, including in red states

A great evening celebrating ARCS San Diego Scientist of the Year, Dr. Knight.

Thank you for using your platform to shed light on the critical status of science. Training programs, critical to the upbringing of many great scientists, are at risk impacting the future of knowledge, innovation, & med.

Iโ€™m incredibly disappointed in NASEM. It seems that theyโ€™re prepared to forego established science to placate the lawless administration. The membership needs to let their leadership know that they wonโ€™t let politics interfere with science and health.

These are challenging times for science, but I'm happy to share a bright moment: our work is on the cover of Cell today.

We built a compendium of human gut microbiomes integrating 168K worldwide samples, revealing patterns of microbiome variation across the globe

Microbiologists get it

Healthy oceans, forests and grasslands thrive upon mutualistic symbioses among diverse tiny life forms

A diversity of beneficial mirobiota in our guts is critical for our growth, metabolism, development, immunity, and neurological function

Same can apply to human societies
