I’d go so far as to argue that pretending Garp is a good person waters down his character. His conflicts and bad decisions/actions are what MAKE him compelling. Bad people can be great characters. Especially when they think they’re actually good. Garp is a good character.

Nothing makes me madder than a garp apologist on my tl JUST SAY YOU DIDN’T UNDERSTAND MARINEFORD. Every argument they’ve ever made is disproven BY the arc. Ppl who can’t accept that they like a morally bad character and HAVE to justify and excuse their actions to feel valid is exhausting.
