Handy Guide:

✅ Free Speech: When GCs who had no relation to my University complained to try and get me kicked off my course

❌ Not Free Speech: Exercising one's right to peaceful protest against those advocating your exclusion from society – on the campus you have to live and work in

Great sounding job for those with the right experience.

Really good to see a company being explicit about anti-racist, equality and ecological commitment and with an eco-minded travel/annual leave policy and plans to trial sabbaticals.

Plus #SheffieldIsSuper obvs.

Not once in the 80s, 90s or 00s do I recall a politician urging the public to embrace email, mobile phones, texting, two factor authentication, online banking, air fryers, or to replace all their cassette collection with a CD collection.

So forgive me if I smell a rat.

Drives me NUTS that this is glossed over and ignored in the discussion. Fuck all of it.

Also AI use shouldn't get through ethics reviews, it's environmentally disastrous and makes money for the some of the most unethical men on the planet, by unethical means. (See also Universities)

Seven countries now generate 100% of their electricity from renewable sources, proving the transition is not theoretical but already operational. The barrier is no longer technology, but political will, investment priorities, and the courage to move faster.

There used to be a ‘live’ Arts and Humanities version of this in Sheffield which connected researchers in A&H with people in Sheffield. The University cut the pretty modest funding for it.

It was great and enabled Sheffielders of all ages to talk with researchers about their research.

It also seems nonsensical that additional training places cannot be delivered safely because of the strike (reason BBC is reporting.)

In fact, they should get anyone else apart from middle aged men to do it.

Guardian should get smalls to review films aimed at children, not middle aged men.

For those who don’t know, the OU brought teachers like Doreen Massey, Stuart Hall, Margie Wetherell, Grahame Thompson, John Allen, Tony Bennett to design and write degree courses to anyone, regardless of prior qualifications often FOR FREE and until 2010ish for around £3-500 p.a.

In a week when I've had it with ridiculous men, here's a line-up of brilliant women for Catherine's excellent course for those whose work has a historical element (not just historians) and who want to translate it for other contexts. Mid-PhD onwards.

One of the most striking things about this area is how the Battle of Orgreave has been totally erased from the park and housing estates which now occupy the site. Not a single sign or information panel. There should be a walking trail along the lines of the Bosworth Battlefield Trail.

Vile and unnecessary. I'm so sorry for all the girls that thought GirlGuiding was a supportive, inclusive space. It should and could have remained so.

This.

And added to it, there is no ethical use of AI because of the people that are making money out of it and how they’re doing it.

Universities need to stop the gymnastics of trying to convince themselves that there is.

No more ‘ethical use of AI’ workshops, please.

I've just started his book The Making of the Middle East and it's really good. Clear, well written and because his voice is so familiar, it's like he's reading it to you.

I can think of a few people who should read it...

Sheffield Hallam restricts TPS access to REF academics only Teaching staff at post-92 institution to be employed by subsidiary firm and lose right to access expensive pensions scheme

As @amyryall.bsky.social pointed out, the REF is supposed to be an audit of institutions not individuals. In that case, let's only award pension benefits to VCs whose universities are in the top 20% of the REF table. That'd tighten them.

Do u think they did an equalities audit before deciding on a two-tier workforce because I have some wild guesses about who is most impacted here.
