I don't mind paying taxes. I should pay taxes. I have a job, and taxes are the price we pay for having a society in which we do things collectively. I do mind deeply that I pay a higher tax rate than Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk.
Ahmed Shihab-Eldin should be freed immediately.
Our latest episode of Beyond the Lecture Hall has a fascinating interview with the amazing @jlisayoung.bsky.social about the prospect of Alberta separatism and a spotlight on OCUFA.

This is a major line being crossed by Alberta's UCP government. Throwing out the work of an independent boundaries committee is authoritarian and extremely anti-democratic.
There is a reason that we do not have MLAs decide on electoral boundaries. Tossing out the Electoral Boundaries Commission and replacing it with a UCP-dominated committee is not just a bad idea. It is really bad for democracy. Ask the US, ask Hungary. This is not normal!

BREAKING: A jury finds that Ticketmaster and Live Nation had an anticompetitive monopoly over big concert venues.
Why is it that price signals, the manifestation of the free market, are some innately wise force when it comes to housing or groceries — but when gas prices rise, we should do everything we can to blunt it? Are drivers exempt from the free market? Are there no alternatives to driving SUVs?
Sebastian Gorka, a national security aide to President Trump, is seeking to become the next head of the National Counterterrorism Center, a position that would give him broad powers over the country’s vast counterterrorism apparatus.
So energized to see this resistance continue. Solidarity ✊🏻
That's the University of Calgary

A very serious prime ministerial statement by Justin Trudeau about Hungary’s elections
It’s so weird to think of Justin Trudeau posting this tweet while wearing a backwards Allouettes cap and smashing beers with Katy Perry at Coachella
NEW: Justice Shaina Leonard ordered a stay on counting separatist referendum petition signatures until she rules on whether the petition should have been approved.

Chiefs raise concerns about collaboration between separatist and government lawyers

I’m not sure what this is referring to specifically but a lot of the government’s argument has been that any harms at this stage are hypothetical, which is what I suspect the context of this was.
I spoke to lawyer/activist/journalist #DimitriLascaris the only CDN journalist who’s been on the ground in #Iran since the #US/#Israel War vs. the country began about his recent trip there. We’ll post the interview on my @ricochetmedia.bsky.social podcast soon. podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/i...
Yup, as others have noted, the video features a boring intro alright. The first 10% (!) consists of pretty pictures and portentous music. Then it switches to Nenshi delivering a bunch of commonplace sentiments before getting to any point. Someone watched too much TV and had too big a budget.
I know there are people who earnestly take Tom Mulcair's opinions seriously, but I just can't imagine what it would take to do that
“In March, SLCN Chief Sheldon Sunshine wrote a letter to Carney calling the prime minister’s tentative agreement with Smith, which builds on their November 2025 memorandum of understanding, a “dangerous mistake” that represents “appeasement” of Smith’s “separatist agenda.””
