Healthcare providers across the country are raising concerns that the ordinance would limit access to care for people living unsheltered and increase preventable illness and death.
Scheduled to begin June 1, when heat can be deadly for those without shelter, this ordinance is framed as one of safety against drug litter, but will instead cause further harm without offering solutions.
The Safe Medical Treatment in Parks Ordinance (G-7467, Sec. 23-45) prohibits street medicine, harm reduction services, and food distribution except through a very limited and unworkable permit system.
Our street medicine colleagues and the people they serve in Phoenix, AZ, are facing a new ordinance that effectively bans medical care for people experiencing unsheltered homelessness in city parks.

Some news: tomorrow at 9am, Ted Koppel + CBS Sunday Morning will air a two-part story on the devastating surge of full-time workers being pushed into homelessness.
I'll be interviewed along with two families from There Is No Place for Us. It would mean a lot if you'd watch and help spread the word.
For context, the NOFO that came out today: endhomelessness.org/wp-content/u...
Let me say this without hesitation or ambiguity - THIS WILL KILL PEOPLE. People who are already operating at the top of their capacity in an environment that is already trying daily.

This is an easy way to help people. If you know people out and about, help them get to the polls. www.cbsnews.com/minnesota/ne...
If you can, send cash to local food banks. You are not better at buying bulk food than they are, I promise.

The idea that people aren't willing to work is a myth. The barriers are high, the stigma is real.

I know I can seem kind of aloof from movement drama sometimes. And I know this framing can be reductive but: we steward a community pantry at the end of our driveway and inadvertently seeing who picks up from it, who is my neighbor who needs it, makes me less obsessed with my own hurt feelings.
Moon Palace, Corazon, that one store that took over Bibelot.

Evicting this camp compounds the trauma of the residents. All shelter beds are full. Gratitude to @moonpalacebooks.bsky.social for offering a respite space.

Beyond the topic, which I really like, the tone of this article is fantastic.
And I'm moved that Jay Patel is out here still trying to help after the Midtown Sheraton.
I think Care Chexx is/was a great idea - more respite beds are deeply needed. People in shelter are often are refused surgeries because there is no location for discharge. I wish the permitting had been cleared first.

This is great, but 7 units for people exiting houselessness? I'd be delighted with 70.
